Still interesting! See free PDF - Proceedings! - The Third International Workshop on Bio-Design Automation (IWBDA) at DAC will bring together researchers from the synthetic biology, systems biology, and design automation communities. The focus is on concepts, methodologies and software tools for the computational analysis of biological systems and the synthesis of biological systems.
Still in its early stages, the field of synthetic biology has been driven by experimental expertise; much of its success can be attributed to the skill of the researchers in specific domains of biology. There has been a concerted effort to assemble repositories of standardized components. However, creating and integrating synthetic components remains an ad hoc process. The field has now reached a stage where it calls for computer-aided design tools. The electronic design automation (EDA) community has unique expertise to contribute to this endeavor. This workshop offers a forum for cross-disciplinary discussion, with the aim of seeding collaboration between the research communities.

the Foresight Institute » Blog Archive » RNA CAD tool for synthetic biology may facilitate RNA nanotechnology

"RNA nanotechnology has a unique set of advantages as a pathway technology toward atomically precise productive nanosystems that reflect its central role in biological systems. Unlike the simple Watson-Crick base-pair molecular recognition code that underlies DNA nanotechnology, the more complex rules of base-pairing involved in RNA folding allow RNA to fold into compact complex three-dimensional shapes. These shapes are somewhat reminiscent of the complex folds of protein structures, yet the folding rules are considerably simpler than those of proteins. These RNA CAD tools may be an important step toward powerful design tools for folded polymer paths toward molecular machine systems."

Gene synthesis: methods and applications. [Methods Enzymol. 2011] - PubMed - NCBI

"DNA synthesis techniques and technologies are quickly becoming a cornerstone of modern molecular biology and play a pivotal role in the field of synthetic biology. The ability to synthesize whole genes, novel genetic pathways, and even entire genomes is no longer the dream it was 30 years ago. Using little more than a thermocycler, commercially synthesized oligonucleotides, and DNA polymerases, a standard molecular biology laboratory can synthesize several kilobase pairs of synthetic DNA in a week using existing techniques. Herein, we review the techniques used in the generation of synthetic DNA, from the chemical synthesis of oligonucleotides to their assembly into long, custom sequences. Software and websites to facilitate the execution of these approaches are explored, and applications of DNA synthesis techniques to gene expression and synthetic biology are discussed. Finally, an example of automated gene synthesis from our own laboratory is provided."
