Supply Chain Compliance In The Amazon Era

Supply Chain Compliance In The Amazon Era | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

In the Amazon age, where it’s now easier than ever to get a product out onto the eCommerce stage, supply chain compliance can take on a whole new meaning. That’s because companies like Amazon and Walmart have their own stringent, unique requirements in supply chain management for manufacturers that deliver to their warehouses, from the types of packaging and labeling used to shipping notifications. Failure to comply with those requirements can be costly, and eat into already-thin margins for those manufacturers. Even worse, according to Justin Leigh, CEO of eCommerce service provider Ideoclick, many manufacturers fail to even realize they’re losing money because of supply chain defects

Walmart Launches New Reusable Bag Campaign; Announces 93 Million Metric Tons of Supplier Emission Reductions through Project Gigaton and Announces New Sustainable Textile Goals

Walmart announced that for the first time, checkout carousels at its U.S. stores will include reusable bags that will be available to customers for purchase. The aim of this new campaign is to help reduce plastic waste and increase customer convenience by placing reusable bags in easy to find and highly frequented sections of its stores. As part of the launch, Walmart is rolling out a new assortment of reusable bags that are made with post-consumer recycled content.
EcoVadis's insight:

The problem of plastic pollution seems to have reached a critical point among consumers and the public. With consumer pressure rising, other bodies have had to react. Reducing the impacts of plastic on the environment is a particular priority for businesses who use plastic to package their products.

Target aims to cut carbon footprint by 30% by 2030

Target aims to cut carbon footprint by 30% by 2030 | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Target has built on initial climate goals from 2017  to set new targets to reduce CO2 generated from Target facilities, energy purchased to power Target facilities and emissions from the entire supply chain. Target introduced a reduction of all greenhouse gas emissions by 30% below 2017 levels by 2030. It has also committed to ensuring that 80% of suppliers set their own science-based reduction targets by 2023 through increased use of renewable energy sources.

EcoVadis's insight:

Many companies are making efforts into reducing their carbon footprints, making sure to mitigate climate change. To make sure these efforts actually help curbing climate change, a new trend is currently gaining momentum: science-based targets. Setting Science Based Targets (SBTs) – emission reduction targets based on the two-degree scenario – is the first step in the strategic transformation required.

85% Of Retailers Haven’t Completed Supply Chain Digitization | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Retailers are missing out on gaining full control of their supply chain, according to new research released on Feb. 13 from Gravity Supply Chain Solutions. Eighty-five of U.S. retailers haven’t completed the digitization processes (using a cloud-based platform with real time visibility, and automation capabilities). “Clearly, the supply chain is the final frontier of retail digitization, and while retailers are anxious about the cost, not moving from manual spreadsheet-based supply chain management towards digitized processes could cost them a whole lot more.” says Graham Parker, CEO of Gravity Supply Chain Solutions.

Kroger enlists in war on plastic

Kroger enlists in war on plastic | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Kroger further advances its ‘Zero Hunger, Zero Waste’ commitment by becoming one of the largest retailers to say good-bye to plastic. The company announced that it will phase out single-use plastic bags and transition to reusable bags across its family of stores by 2025. Seattle-based Quality Food Centers (QFC), a subsidiary of Kroger, will be the company's first retail division to phase out single-use plastic bags. The company expects QFC's transition to be completed in 2019.

EcoVadis's insight:

Great initiative by Kroger with regard to sustainability. It is estimated that 100 billion single-use plastic bags are thrown away in the U.S. every year. Currently, less than five percent of plastic bags are recycled annually in America.

Carrefour Belgium Partners With Pork Supplier Westvers

Carrefour Belgium Partners With Pork Supplier Westvers | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Carrefour Belgium has announced that it has entered into a partnership with pork supplier Westvers, to improve the traceability and quality of its products. The collaboration will result in the implementation of blockchain technology in Westvers’ meat supply chain. It will allow consumers to learn about the origin of the meat, and its journey from the farm to the supermarket shelves by scanning a QR code on the packaging.

EcoVadis's insight:

Traceability can be used to prove certain attributes of a product such as its ethical credentials or country of origin. As consumers become more aware of how products are made and the issues surrounding manufacturing, transparency and traceability is valued.

Asda has removed 6,500 tonnes of plastic from its own brand packaging | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Retailer Asda has announced that it has removed 6,500 tonnes of plastic from its own brand packaging since February 2018. The supermarket said that this marks a major step towards its ongoing commitment to reduce the quantity of plastic used in its product packaging. Asda has also taken steps to make its packaging more recyclable, including changing all of its fresh produce trays from black plastic to clear, as it moves towards making all of its packaging 100% recycled by 2025.

Starbucks commits to 10,000 ‘Greener Stores’ by 2025 | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Starbucks has announced an initiative to design, build and operate 10,000 ‘Greener Stores’ globally by 2025, with wider aims to help the wider retail industry operate more sustainably. The ‘Starbucks Greener Stores’ framework is being set up to outline comprehensive performance criteria so that the design, building and operation of Starbucks’ locations will set new standards for ‘green retail’ – this will then be open sourced so that the wider retail community can benefit from the framework and work toward the standards. Developed with the help of experts such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), some key elements of the framework are set to include energy efficiency and water stewardship; renewable energy; healthy environment; responsible materials; waste diversion; and engagement (promoting a culture of sustainability).

EcoVadis's insight:

Great job Starbucks! Multinational organizations play a crucial role in the success of sustainability. These supply chains employ more than one in five workers and touch more than 80 percent of global trade, making collaboration across suppliers and industries critical to long-term success.

Weis Markets embraces sustainability trend

Weis Markets embraces sustainability trend | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Weis Markets is trying to stay ahead of sustainability trends in food retail. Weis Markets has just opened a new store in Randolph, N.J., that was built with multiple sustainability measures, including the company’s first CO2 refrigeration system, which significantly reduces its carbon footprint and overall energy use. The company also incorporated LED lighting to reduce electrical needs; low-flow devices to support water conservation efforts; energy control through demand response programs to reduce power usage during peak days and to reduce the store’s load on the power grid; and enclosed refrigeration cases to reduce energy use as well as advanced refrigeration technologies to reduce refrigerant use by 60 percent when compared to conventional systems.

EcoVadis's insight:

Whether it involves carbon emissions, waste management, electricity consumption, or other business activities impacting environmental aspects, eco-innovation can provide a great path for easier, more widespread, cost-effective ways to minimize companies’ environmental footprint.
