Airline SAF pledges pick up pace ahead of COP27 climate summit

Airline SAF pledges pick up pace ahead of COP27 climate summit | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Announcements from airlines on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) commitments are coming thick and fast in the run-up to the COP27 climate summit, which takes place later this month in Egypt.

British Airways and Air France-KLM are the latest carriers to publicize their efforts on this front, with the former announcing on 2 November an agreement to accelerate SAF production in the UK and the latter revealing in late October the signing of two multi-year SAF contracts.

However, the aviation industry faces criticism from environmental campaigners who argue that the sector’s decarbonization strategy should focus on reducing the number of flights in addition to relying heavily on fledgling and yet-to-be-developed technologies.

BA has signed an agreement with sustainable fuel company LanzaJet and agricultural waste conversion specialist Nova Pangaea Technologies. The goal is to accelerate an initiative known as Project Speedbird, which aims to produce SAF in the UK from agricultural and wood waste.

LanzaJet received another boost last month when Breakthrough Energy – a company founded by Bill Gates in 2015 to accelerate clean energy transition – awarded a $50 million grant to its planned Freedom Pines Fuels alcohol-to-jet SAF plant in Soperton, Georgia.

Sustainability across Airplane Manufacturers

Sustainability across Airplane Manufacturers | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Emission-Free Aviation Requires Holistic Strategy
Like most industries, airplane manufacturers factor rework into the cost of doing business. That approach won’t be um…sustainable in this next era as increasingly stringent policies such as the European Green Deal kick in and cost pressures rise. IDC analysts said that by 2024, 80% of global manufacturers will incorporate environmental sustainability into their product life cycle management processes and ecosystem, improving sales by 3%. The challenge for airplane manufacturers is keeping track of CO2 emissions across multilayered business operations.

“Companies need to understand the entire CO2 footprint of every part that’s used in the airplane, along with every step of work associated with it, including sourcing and production, quality checks, production stoppages and rework, shipping, and recycling,” said Welte. “Industry leaders are moving towards a holistic strategy for sustainable design through the airplane’s life cycle. For example, inside cabin materials are often switched out after a few years, with most ending up in landfills. How do you create a more circular economy during the airplane’s lifespan?”

Schiphol invests in TaxiBots for sustainable aircraft taxiing

Schiphol invests in TaxiBots for sustainable aircraft taxiing | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is investing in two TaxiBots, becoming the first in Europe to use the special towing vehicles that enable aircraft to taxi sustainably.

The sustainable taxiing process sees aircraft taken to and from the runway by a special towing vehicle, with the aircraft engines remaining largely switched off. The TaxiBots, supplied by Smart Airport Systems, will enter service at Schiphol in mid-2022.

A previous trial at the airport demonstrated that sustainable taxiing reduces fuel consumption during taxiing by around 50%, thereby lowering carbon, nitrogen and ultrafine particle emissions. Indeed, given the distance involved, fuel savings can reach up to 65% when aircraft taxi to the Polderbaan – Schiphol’s sixth, and most distant, runway.

Jet Zero: Five sustainable aviation innovations to watch in 2022

Jet Zero: Five sustainable aviation innovations to watch in 2022 | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

The UK was the first major economy to commit to deliver net zero aviation by 2050 – and later establishing the Jet Zero Council – the UK’s first major step in transforming an industry which has contributed over 2% of global CO2 emissions pre-pandemic[1]. On an international scale, further commitment to sustainable aviation was made at COP26 with the launch of the International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition (ICAC) where 26 countries, including the UK, pledged to reduce aviation emissions in a bid to meet global emissions targets. This sets the UK in a strong position going into the ICAO General Assembly in September 2022 where nations present their work towards agreeing a long term global aspirational goal for international aviation.

United Airlines Strengthens Onboard Mask Policy to Further Protect Passengers and Employees Against COVID-19 Spread – Press Releases on CSRwire.com

United Airlines has announced that, along with other Airlines for America (A4A) members, it will strengthen mandatory mask policies to further mitigate against the spread of COVID-19 and help continue to keep passengers and crew safe. While the overwhelming majority of passengers are complying with United's mandatory policy, starting on June 18, any passenger that does not comply when onboard a United flight will be placed on an internal travel restriction list. Customers on this list will lose their travel privileges on United for a duration of time to be determined pending a comprehensive incident review.

United currently requires all passengers to wear a face covering onboard its flights and expects that policy to remain in place for at least the next 60 days. The only exceptions to this policy are individuals who have a medical condition or a disability that prevents them from wearing a face covering, those who cannot put on or remove a face covering themselves and small children. Customers are expected to wear a mask for the duration of the flight, except when eating or drinking.

Sport urged to drop high carbon sponsorship deals

Sport urged to drop high carbon sponsorship deals | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
A new report called "Sweat Not Oil" says the deals damage progress in efforts to tackle global warming.

It says there are more than 250 sponsor agreements worldwide between sports groups and high carbon industries.

"Sport floats on a sea of sponsorship deals with the major polluters," report co-author Andrew Simms said.

"It makes the crisis worse by normalising high-carbon, polluting lifestyles, and reducing the pressure for climate action."

The report is published by the New Weather Institute think tank, climate charity Possible and the Rapid Transition Alliance.

Thirteen sports were examined, with football found to have the most deals - 57 in total worldwide - from kit sponsors to stadium naming rights being sold to oil and gas companies, as well as airlines and motoring firms.

United Airlines targets 50 pct cut in greenhouse gas emissions

United Airlines said on Thursday it has set a goal to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent over the next few decades to help reduce its carbon footprint and its dependence on fossil fuels. The third-largest U.S. air carrier will invest more than $2 billion a year in more fuel-efficient aircraft, expanding its use of low-carbon biofuels in daily flights and implementing ways to better conserve fuel. "This is not only good for the environment but guards against oil price instability," Aaron Stash, a United manager of environmental strategy and sustainability, told reporters. Fuel costs account for a major portion of airlines' expenses, and rising oil prices over the past year have eaten in to industry profits, sending carriers scrambling to mitigate the impact.

EcoVadis's insight:

Remarkable initiative by United Airlines! Best practice for emissions policies is to communicate clear principles and objectives for the reduction of GHG emissions in qualitative and quantitative terms, reporting of Key performance indicators (KPIs) can have an even stronger, positive impact on a suppliers’ scorecard.
