Fredrika Klarén on why meeting the challenges of the electric vehicle transition requires industry collaboration and how Polestar is leading the charge
The automotive industry makes a significant contribution to carbon emissions. In Australia, light vehicles – mostly cars and vans – account for about 11% of all greenhouse gas emissions, and are the biggest contributors in the transport sector. Worldwide, road transport is responsible for about 15% of total emissions.
Reducing this number would translate to a meaningful shift in total greenhouse gas emissions. However, Fredrika Klarén, the head of sustainability at Polestar, says no single car manufacturer can do it alone.
While reducing its climate impact is a priority, Polestar is also increasingly focused on how sharing its progress with the industry at large has the potential to transform the impact of motoring as a whole.

Traceability is a key area of focus for Government organisations across the world who are conscious of reducing the carbon footprint produced by the automotive industry. One sector of the industry which may be overlooked by some for its environmental impact is the tyre industry. The tyre industry is at a key moment, facing growing regulatory pressures alongside an increasing need for efficiency, traceability, and sustainability to be optimised.
The upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) represents a key shift for the tyre industry, demanding increased levels of supply chain due diligence. However, although the compliance deadline is fast approaching, many tyre manufacturers are far behind when it comes to implementing the necessary traceability frameworks.

Porsche AG and Norsk Hydro ASA will work together to further reduce the carbon footprint of Porsche’s car models by using low-carbon aluminium and extrusions from Hydro. In addition, the two companies will collaborate on an innovative value chain concept for battery materials and its recycling. The German luxury sports car maker and the Norwegian industrial company have signed an agreement in Oslo today, to bolster to the sustainability strategies of both companies.
Hydro will deliver Porsche and several of Porsche’s component suppliers with its low-carbon aluminium offering, Hydro Reduxa 4.0 and lower. This primary aluminium alloy has one of the lowest CO2 footprints on the market today and is produced with renewable energy. The footprint covers the emissions from the mine to the metal. By 2025 Hydro will enable Porsche to reduce the footprint of the aluminium in future vehicle projects to around 3.5 kilograms of CO2 per kilogram aluminium used. This is approx. 60 percent lower than the average primary aluminium consumed in Europe currently.

The European Commission on Wednesday published an action plan, which promises to deliver a “robust and sustainable automotive sector”. The plan includes €1.8bn to create a “secure and competitive supply chain for battery raw materials”.
In an attempt to stop the EU car industry falling further behind competitors such as China and the US, the commission is also proposing a European Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Alliance, backed by joint public–private investments of around €1bn, to bring together those involved in developing the next generation of vehicles.
The action plan is further accompanied by a communication aimed at encouraging countries to adopt best practices to green corporate fleets, which account for roughly 60 per cent of new car registrations in the EU.

Volvo Cars forever disrupted the industry with its three-point seat belt design more than 60 years ago.
The Swedish automaker is now leading the charge on the next big industry movement: Sustainability.
Vanessa Butani, who recently joined the company as its global head of sustainability, has a heady task -- to make Volvo the "most sustainable automaker" in the world. That means going far beyond installing solar panels and incorporating recycled plastics into the brand's vehicles. Under her direction, owners of Volvo cars will learn about all aspects of their vehicle -- where the minerals were sourced in the electric battery and how the wool in the seats meets animal welfare standards.
Butani said sustainability is good for business and more consumers are coming to the brand after learning about its ongoing sustainability work. And there is no greenwashing happening at the company. In her role, Butani is reevaluating all aspects of the brand's decisions and manufacturing processes to ensure that the company's messaging is holistic and genuine.

Automotive businesses feel unable to be more environmentally responsible due to the high costs associated with complying with regulations, as well as the increased pressure it puts on their resources.
New research has found that while nine out of 10 (87%) businesses in the automotive sector see pollution prevention as a priority, three quarters (73%) think keeping on top of environmental regulations puts additional pressure on their business, and a further 72% say it’s expensive to remain compliant.
Almost half (48%) said they struggle to understand how to remain compliant with environmental regulations, and 65% say they feel environmental regulation isn’t talked about enough in the industry.

Since partnering with Official Supplier, AERO, six months ago, Jaguar TCS Racing has been working with the team to apply their material technology to their racing cars.
AERO’s advanced urethane film forms the I-TYPE 6's black, white and gold livery and is an alternative to traditional wrap with a streamlined, sustainable manufacturing and application process. This creates minimal impact on the environment with no polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds, emits no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and produces zero carbon dioxide (CO2).

In mid-2022, automakers, consumers, regulators, and investors were focusing on the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EV). While this would reduce tail-pipe emissions, it ignored the fact that the production of EVs—and especially their batteries—increases emissions in the supply chain.
Many automakers were announcing deadlines by which they would stop selling ICE vehicles altogether, buoyed by investment analysts and favorable press. But BMW decided to focus on lifecycle emissions and pursued a flexible powertrain strategy by offering vehicles with several options: gasoline and diesel-fueled ICE, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and battery electric vehicles. That approach received a frostier reception in the stock market.
Harvard Business School assistant professor Shirley Lu discusses how BMW plans to convince stakeholders that its strategy is good for both the environment and the company’s financial performance in the case, “Driving Decarbonization at BMW.”
