Facebook 'Likes' can reveal your sexuality, ethnicity, politics, and your parent's divorce

Facebook 'Likes' can reveal your sexuality, ethnicity, politics, and your parent's divorce | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Big data is not your friend because it can easily be used to reveal highly personal information...

Big data is the Stasi of our online worlds

There are many "silent listeners" in social networks that collect people's "Likes" and other online behaviors so that the information can be sold discretely to third parties. Facebook, Google, and all other social networks, also collect such behavioral information.

===> While the companies say that their behavioral Big Data is stripped of users' names, it is possible to use other databases such as electoral records, demographic information, and location data, to identify individuals by name.

It's essentially a secret dossier on more than a 1 billion social network users. <===

While this dossier is fragmented at the moment, sophisticated new technologies will soon make it trivial to pull together a massive amount of sensitive private data on every individual that interacts with the Internet in any way.

Facebook's Graph Search worries security experts

Facebook's Graph Search worries security experts | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Post highlighting embarrassing things raises questions of user privacy with Graph Search, which Facebook users cannot opt out of

Facebook believes its responsibility is to provide the privacy settings, while users are responsible for using them. "You control who you share your interests and likes with on Facebook," the company said Thursday in an emailed statement.

When joining Facebook, people trade their personal information for free use of the social network. Given that, security experts agree that people are responsible for controlling who sees that information.

However, some experts believe Facebook does not go far enough in educating users about the potential threats in keeping information public. Because Graph Search makes all that personal information easily searchable, education on its dangers should be a much higher priority for Facebook.

===> "Some people do not grasp the importance of Graph Search," said Bogdon Botezatu, a senior e-threat analyst for Bitdefender. "So maybe it would be better for Facebook to actually inform people that some things will change." <===

Gust MEES's insight:

Posting to Facebook is free, but the cost is acceptance of Facebook’s iron grip on the opaque news feed. Facebook’s still a gift horse, but it’s an inconsistent one. We might not want to saddle up and build a business completely dependent on something that could buck us off so easily.

Facebook scores points in Europe after disabling facial recognition

Facebook scores points in Europe after disabling facial recognition | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

The move to disable facial recognition tagging in Europe has scored the social network some much-needed points in an official audit.

Facebook has finally satisfied the European Union by disabling facial recognition tagging.

Facebook, which was subjected to an audit by Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner (DPC), was under pressure to implement a variety of changes in Europe, mostly dealing with privacy and security issues.

Last December, Facebook had promised to make the changes outlined in the audit document in order to comply with European regulations.

Welcome to Clickwrapped — the web's report card

Whenever we use a website, we agree (sometimes without knowing it) to legal agreements such as terms of service and privacy policies. There are many clauses in these agreements that deserve our close attention. For example, what can the site can do with content we post? When can it disclose our personal information?

But they are hard to read and it is difficult to know how one social network, search engine, or photo sharing site compares to another. Clickwrapped analyzes the policies and practices of leading consumer websites and grades each company according to how well it respects your rights.
