Half of the world´s population has moved into cities, due to the economic globalization and urbanisation. Besides, according to the UN World Urbanization Prospects Report, the planet will have eight more megacities before 2025. The European Union, like the US and China, has placed the Smart City project into its strategic agenda and are providing support to it. New Tools Help to Connect “Things” - Connected World Magazine The number of Internet-connected devices is set to grow. According to IMS Research, www.imsresearch.com, the number of Internet-enabled devices is forecast to reach 9.6 billion by the end of 2012. The research firm also expects 28 billion Internet-connected devices by the end of 2020. Whether or not these numbers become fact, they show the potential for the technology. IMS Research points out 75% of the devices forecast by 2012 are what it considers “existing connected devices,” meaning they are in categories such as fixed and mobile communications, computers, and consumer electronics. But the research firm also says these segments are projected to account for just half of the total installed base by 2020, predicting Internet connectivity will become more common in fields including medical, industrial, and automotive.

A panel about Smart Cities in the context of the ICT competitiveness week, organized by DG CONNECT of the European Commission, discussed a useful way to reduce the complexity of a smart city endeavor, taking into consideration five key dimensions: -why should a city be smart? because of environmental, financial, competitiveness issues or what? -who plays which role ina smart city? who are the users, the buyers, the investors, etc -what domains or processes need to be addressed first? -where is the smartness required? For a whole city, an urban area, a county, a state? -when does smartness come into place? does it refer to real-time operations or to slower planning or even policy-making cycles?

Most technology companies involved in Smart City development think they can compete in the whole value chain. Well, they cannot. And no one wants that to happen. That's what the participants (mainly from telecommunications) of the Smart Cities Industry Summit (25-26 Sept) in London were told in a panel session on business models.
