PARIS – Ulis announced a 20 million euros ($24 million) investment in a new infrared sensor facility near Grenoble, France, to penetrate emerging high volume markets such as automotive and low-resolution sensors. Ulis, a France-based provider of infrared imaging sensors, uses amorphous silicon microbolometer technology (aSi). The technology is today used in a broad range of commercial and military applications like thermography, night vision, surveillance, firefighting, search and rescue, and home energy audits. For the first time, Ulis said it will introduce to the market a series of low cost IR sensors. "There is a huge market demand now, and Ulis' offer meets market expectations in terms of cost, performance and reliability," declared Jean-François Delepau, managing director of Ulis, to EETimes...

European Commission Press release Brussels, 10 July 2012 Commission launches innovation partnership for Smart Cities and Communities. A challenge facing the EU is how best to design and adapt cities into smart intelligent and sustainable environments. Almost three quarters of Europeans live in cities, consuming 70% of the EU's energy. Congestion costs Europe about 1% of its GDP every year; most of it is located in urban areas. Smart urban technologies can make a major contribution to tackling many urban challenges. What would it take for the U.S. to work out such an initiative?

Mobile operators may be able to stake out a more profitable position in the M2M value chain by providing direct M2M services that couple connectivity with both device- and application-based offerings. The upside of M2M services for these businesses is that though they reflect relatively low ARPU per line or device, they have the potential for high margins. They can drive revenue through 2.5G and SMS network infrastructure. And customer acquisition and management costs are quite low.
