Traditionally, we have relied on more passive forms of resources (i.e. textbooks, journals, news articles, videos, etc...) to help our learners understand core content....

If you have worked in any educational environment from elementary school, higher education, or corporate training, then you have had students who consistently struggle with a topic, skill, or prerequisite knowledge that they must learn in order to be successful. Likewise, many of those same students struggle to motivate themselves to learn the material they are struggling with.

This survey shows the potential upside if Open Ed. Resoures become more mainstream. There still are barriers to adoption but they are being lowered. Certainly, the more information faculty get about how to find, use, and choose the best interactive resoures to enhance their course the more likly they will use them.

Flipped and hybrid modalities can add much value for students, though I believe the lower adoption rates can be attributed to the extra time needed to create the educational resources. I also believe that even today there is still some fear of technology.

"Open educational resources, or OER, are public-domain learning materials that instructors and students can use free instead of shelling out for textbooks. If you didn’t know that, you’re not alone: 66 percent of faculty members said they were “unaware” of OER, according to a recent survey by the Babson Survey Research Group."

Digital publishing has the potential to reinvent the nature of the book from more passive & reflective to engaging & interactive. The book of the future will seamlessly blend text, sound, graphics, video, as well as embedded social networking tools, games, simulations, and interactive tutorials/animations across many device platforms. Also, personalized learning analytics will enable books to become more customized to the readers skills, knowledge, abilities, and interests.

John Shank, instructional design librarian at Penn State Berks, has written the first book on interactive open educational resources. An invaluable tool for college faculty and students -- as well as high school teachers -- the book titled "Interactive Open Educational Resources: A Guide to Finding, Choosing, and Using What's Out There to Transform College Teaching" was published by JB, a division of Wiley. There will be a book signing event from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 in the campus' Bookstore. Light refreshments will be served.
