Are You Missing This Piece to Enhance Student Learning?

Are You Missing This Piece to Enhance Student Learning? | The iOER Handbook | Scoop.it

Traditionally, we have relied on more passive forms of resources (i.e. textbooks, journals, news articles, videos, etc...) to help our learners understand core content....

Julie Price's curator insight, February 20, 2015 10:41 PM

What a great quote. Pass it on to your kids when they set off to school!

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, March 8, 2015 3:35 PM
If you have worked in any educational environment from elementary school, higher education, or corporate training, then you have had students who consistently struggle with a topic, skill, or prerequisite knowledge that they must learn in order to be successful. Likewise, many of those same students struggle to motivate themselves to learn the material they are struggling with.

Using open-source (free) materials to augment content: Results from the new Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation survey.

John Shank's insight:

This survey shows the potential upside if Open Ed. Resoures become more mainstream. There still are barriers to adoption but they are being lowered. Certainly, the more information faculty get about how to find, use, and choose the best interactive resoures to enhance their course the more likly they will use them.

Griff Lewis's curator insight, February 12, 2015 9:01 AM

Flipped and hybrid modalities can add much value for students, though I believe the lower adoption rates can be attributed to the extra time needed to create the educational resources.  I also believe that even today there is still some fear of technology.

Open Education’s Publicity Problem – Chronicle of Higher Education

Open Education’s Publicity Problem – Chronicle of Higher Education | The iOER Handbook | Scoop.it

"Open educational resources, or OER, are public-domain learning materials that instructors and students can use free instead of shelling out for textbooks. If you didn’t know that, you’re not alone: 66 percent of faculty members said they were “unaware” of OER, according to a recent survey by the Babson Survey Research Group."

John Shank's insight:

This indicates we are still in the early adopter stage. #edtech #ALA #OERs #Openaccess #educause #elearning

"Today’s college freshmen class, in particular, has been using smartphones or tablet devices for more than six years, according to a recent IDC study commissioned by Adobe."

John Shank's insight:

Digital publishing has the potential to reinvent the nature of the book from more passive & reflective to engaging & interactive. The book of the future will seamlessly blend text, sound, graphics, video, as well as embedded social networking tools, games, simulations, and interactive tutorials/animations across many device platforms. Also, personalized learning analytics will enable books to become more customized to the readers skills, knowledge, abilities, and interests.

"Recent faculty surveys show that some of the most difficult challenges instructors face when teaching are motivating and engaging their students, while making connections to critical course content. And today’s students are “digital natives”—a generation who like to be able to watch, listen, read, and interact with their technology-rich environment. Consequently, interactive learning resources in various formats (including multimedia tutorials, modules, games and simulations) are rapidly becoming vital learning resources for faculty and students to enhance both classroom and online learning. Unfortunately, it is difficult and confusing for faculty, librarians and students to locate and utilize existing high-quality interactive learning resources."
