"In the South Bay Area (Santa Clara County + the Fremont area) there are currently more than 500 young people on waiting lists for Mentors. These are young people seeking support and guidance; we want to make sure they get it.
We have a simple goal: to connect adults in our community with young people seeking guidance and support. We are lucky to have a dozen agencies offering well-developed mentoring services to young people and volunteers. We know mentoring works; it always has. Mentoring is about relationships, and healthy relationships are the bedrock of human development. Healthy people need support, encouragement, and guidance. We are in the business of developing healthy people."...

"The Coordinated School Health (CSH) Program provides technical support to schools and district in the areas of student health and safety, including: California Healthy Kids Survey, Oral Health Assessment Reporting, HIV/STD Program, Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Program Title IV Part A, and the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA). Additional services provided include professional development and training opportunities for teachers, staff, parents and students in areas relative to student health and wellness: suicide prevention and intervention, asset development, substance abuse and youth, and Coordinated School Health (CSH). This work is supported by a Coordinated School Health Collaborative which meets throughout the year."

"Using a high-tech optic scan camera the FocusFirst program conducts vision screenings among children ages 6 months to 5 years old in child care and preschool settings to detect vision problems and provide immediate follow-up care so that the children can access corrective services. In this fiscal year, FocusFirst intends on serving up to 6,000 children in a pilot program and 36,000 children the following year."

"The Alliance was founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation as a response to the growing rate of childhood obesity. And just like our founders, our goal as an organization has always been to create systemic change, change that is not isolated to one home, or community, to one school, industry, or state. We want to create healthy changes that build upon one another and create a system, a nation, that makes the healthy choice the easy choice.
First, we set our sights on schools. It’s where kids spend most of their time outside the home so it seemed like a good place to start. We created our Healthy Schools Program in 2006 and launched in 231 schools in 13 states. The Healthy Schools Program has since grown to become the nation’s most extensive effort to prevent childhood obesity in schools now including more than 20,000 schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico."

"Healthier Kids Foundation is hosting its 5th Annual Symposium on the Status of Children's Health on Monday, May 11th from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Microsoft Sunnyvale Campus (1020 Enterprise Way, Sunnyvale, CA 94089). Emphasizing the importance of engaging in "Healthier Earlier" strategies, this year's Symposium will focus on the sugar pandemic.
The Symposium's keynote speaker is Dr. Robert H. Lustig, MD, MSL, and Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and Member of the Institute of Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Lustig is currently investigating the contribution of nutritional, neural, hormonal, and genetic influences in the expression of the current obesity epidemic and diabetes both in children and adults.
Lustig graduated from MIT in 1976, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980, and his Masters of Studies of Law from UC Hastings College of Law in 2013. Dr. Lustig is the past Chairman of the Ad hoc Obesity Task Force of The Endocrine Society, and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association of the Bay Area."...

"The B.O.O.K. Tutorial Program is designed to provide academic assistance to students who express the need. The areas of concentration are Math and Science. Tutoring is provided on homework and test preparation. The commitment of time from the tutors is arranged through the director. Tutoring classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday with classes suspended when school is out. The Building Our Own Kids (B.O.O.K.) and READING Academy are FREE after school programs that provide a safe and quiet atmosphere where students in grades K-12 can study, complete homework, receive academic assistance in all subject areas, and improve literacy skills.
