One of the programs, Roots of Empathy, brings infants and their mothers into school to help students recognize emotions and experience empathy. We discuss the social and emotional learning movement, which aims to teach fundamental life skills in schools, and how it's being used in Oakland." (KQED) http://www.kqed.org/a/forum/R201301180900 ;
Emily Bauer's family said the drug that landed the Cypress, Texas, teen, then 16, in the ICU wasn't bought from a dealer. It was a form of synthetic marijuana.
(From Mindful Schools Website: http://www.mindfulschools.org/resources/room-to-breathe/) "Room To Breathe is a surprising story of transformation as struggling kids in a San Francisco public middle school are introduced to the practice of mindfulness meditation. Topping the district in disciplinary suspensions, and with overcrowded classrooms creating a nearly impossible learning environment, overwhelmed administrators are left with stark choices: repeating the cycle of trying to force tuned-out children to listen, or to experiment with timeless inner practices that may provide them with the social, emotional, and attentional skills that they need to succeed."
Recommendations from several organizations, including APA, on how the U.S. Federal government can prevent and respond to bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, and other school violence incidents.

"Katherine Newman says most rampages are long planned by attackers longing to fit in, gain acceptance. And many hint at plans."
Roxana Marachi, PhD's insight:
From Dr. Katherine Newman, Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at Johns Hopkins University and co-author of "Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings" (2004). This article is among the more thoughtful/evidence-based perspectives I've seen so far in newsreports. I read her book several years ago and recommend for anyone interested in research on the multi-faceted/complex social layers of influence underlying many of these tragic shootings.

"...The key to having safer schools - as well as increasing attendance, achievement and graduation rates - is by adopting and implementing an 'Inside-out Approach' - one that focuses on improving the overall school climate by strengthening the relationships among the youth and adults, viewing students as resources and contributors, utilizing restorative justice practices and policies, and changing the social norms that allow bullying to occur."
"Fact: Despite 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of mania, hostility, violence and even homicidal ideation,and dozens of high profile shootings/killings tied to psychiatric drug use, there has yet to be a federal investigation on the link between psychiatric drugs and acts of senseless violence."
Roxana Marachi, PhD's insight:
Deeply saddened by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut this morning and wondering if the investigation will reveal a link to psychotropic drug use that seems to be so common in these rampage school shootings. Many complex factors in the mix... all should be considered when we look to prevention efforts.
"WASHINGTON, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 — Amid a flurry of recent research showing the importance of interpersonal and intrapersonal skills for success in school, work and life, a new report catalogs effective educational programs designed to build those skills..."
