This post has its origins in a furious row I had with a good friend after an ayahuasca ceremony almost a year ago. Partly what incensed me in the row and further fueled its flames was my friend's d...
I propose a two-part argument: first, that the act of reading can overcome the bias that scholars have observed in relationships between people and, second, that narrative empathy has the potential to prevent future cases of bias by reconfiguring readers' criteria for similarity. In an extended case study of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel Mary Barton: A Tale of Manchester Life (1848), I argue that Victorian social-problem literature thematizes empathy across difference and that the self-conscious treatment of cultural difference is particularly helpful for overcoming similarity bias.

Hillman: It’s the old, mystical idea that once the rainmaker puts himself or herself in order, the rain falls. It’s the shamanistic idea that unless I’m in order, I can’t put anything else in order. It’s also an idea basic to modern therapeutic practice: How are you going to help the world if you’re not in order? You’re just going to be acting out; you’re going to be out in the street, making trouble. First get inside yourself, find out who you are, get yourself straightened out, and then go out into the world; then you can be useful. Understand, I’m arguing the therapeutic point of view now: Put all the architects, the politicians, the scientists, the doctors into therapy, where they’ll find themselves, get in touch with their feelings, become better people. Then they can go out and help the world.
We’ve held to that view, but I don’t think that’s it; I don’t think it works. I wish it did, but I don’t think it does.
There are different forms of mediation practice -- among them Transcendental Meditation or "TM" (a Hollywood-approved technique heralded by David Lynch), Qigoing (a Chinese form of "energy healing"), and even yoga -- all of which carry their own array of benefits; however mindfulness meditation is one of the more widely used, and most heavily researched methods.
Two years ago researchers at Justus Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany and Harvard Medical School integrated decades of existing research into a comprehensive conjectural report, which explains the various neurological and conceptual processes through which mindfulness mediation works (and which recent studies have continued to affirm.)
The report suggests that mindfulness meditation operates through a combination of several distinct mechanisms: attention regulation, body awareness, emotion regulation, and a change in perspective on the self. Each component is believed to assist us in various aspects of our lives, and when functioning together, the cumulative process claims to lend an enhanced capacity for "self-regulation" -- the ability to control our own "thought, affect, behavior, or attention" (The loss of which has been cited as the cause of much psychological distress and suffering).
In other words, the researchers suggest that the practice allows us to develop a stronger command over the machinery of the mind, a dexterity which, according to a study released this week, stays with you long after you finish meditating.

Enlightenment porn functions much the same way as guitar porn. Enlightenment porn comes mainly in the form of books whose centerpieces are stories of the authors’ enlightenment experiences. In hushed and reverent tones the author tells you about how he was in a hut in the deep canyons of Tibet or perhaps on a mountain peak in the Mojave Desert, when all of a sudden he became one with the universe. The story is intended to make you lust after an experience just like the one you’re reading about. The author very often hopes you will pay a handsome sum for this privilege, usually at a seminar advertised in the back pages.
In the Soto tradition it is seen as a mistake to talk about these so-called enlightenment experiences publicly. All Dogen, the founder of our tradition, says about his own enlightenment experience is that while he was at Tendo Nyojo’s temple in China he experienced “the dropping off of both body and mind.” He gives no further details. But, of course, all of his writing is in some respects the story of what he experienced that day.
Soon, there will be no one to protect "ordinary" people from drug infused character-less madness and extracting mania hidden behind spirituality and fake drug infused power, unity and community. Your strength is fake strength. Your love is fake love.Your compassion and empathy are fake empathy and love. You are abusers. You are blind. Your art is worthless, your music is noise, your revolutions are childish anger and destruction, your inventions are totally disconnected from Nature.
Aaroe and Petersen believe that resource sharing was so crucial to human survival that it became deeply engrained in our collective psyche, where it remains today. Indeed, modern social welfare policies and institutions may be simply a modern manifestation of an ancient mental strategy to coerce widespread sharing.
Purchase: http://www.der.org/films/meeting-ancestors.html This video documents an encounter between two groups of indigenous Brazilian people. Wai-Wai, a Waiãpi leader, takes a trip to meet the Zo'é, a group only recently contacted by outsiders. Both tribes speak Tupi-Guarani dialects and share many cultural traditions; a rapport quickly develops between Wai-Wai and the Zo'é as they take on the roles of anthropologists, questioning one another about hunting techniques, crafts, and forms of dress. Having had more experience with white society, Wai-Wai is able to warn the Zo'é about the potential danger of gold prospectors. He also introduces video technology, to everyone's fascination, and makes videos of his trip to show to everyone at home.
