Biotechnologies like cybernetic implants and genetic manipulation might seem terrifying to some, but they're being welcomed with open arms by a group of thinkers who call themselves the transhumanists. Amanda Smith investigates the group and the arguments they are provoking about what humans will be like in the future…

Growing up under communist rule in East Germany, Lukas Oehmigen didn’t have much in the way of worldly possessions, but he did develop an intense interest in DIY. When art school beckoned he turned his attention to the world of 3-D printing and developed a giant-sized fabricator that can print objects larger than a La-Z-Boy recliner.

When we think of the future of the military, we think of bigger and better weapons. Laser canons and the like. But what about the people operating those lasers? How can a behemoth like the Navy ready its future sailors for the high-tech combat of tomorrow? Believe it or not, with an Oculus Rift. Via Didier Preud'homme (Logicamp)

Although 3D printing in metal is advancing on an industrial scale, it’s not quite at the level of widespread DIY efforts. Unless you have a robotic welding arm handy. Designer Joris Laarman created the awesome machine in the video above, which effectively 3D prints metal lines in any direction and without any support structures, all with a satisfying creaking sound. The robotic arm basically draws freeform and the welding machine on the end adds molten metal a little bit at a time, like a giant automated 3Doodler. Via Jean-Philippe BOCQUENET
