This revamping of shop class has lots of implications for education. For one thing, it brings the act of making back into the academic curriculum. Hands-on workshops and traditional shop classes have been disappearing from high schools. They were often marginalized and given the bad rap of being something you did if you weren’t good at sitting still in class. This meant that kids relegated to shop classes were often treated as though their efforts could only lead toward vocational training, meaning that their employment choices were limited to industrial or manual work. At the same time kids who would have benefitted from tinkering and hand-on making were given the message that shop class was somewhow beneath them, losing out on important spacial explorations that could help them gain confidence to work with their hands. (I myself landed in engineering school as a 17-year old who had never been in a shop class.) Via Rex Brodie

Les progrès dans le monde de la robotique vont très vite, certains scientifiques fabriquent même des mechas semblables au Metal Gear ou des bébés artificiels (terrifiants). Mais concernant l’IA, il se pose tout de même un gros problème : les robots ne sentent rien, et ne se rendent pas compte de leur force. Un problème qui va à l’encontre d’une loi de la robotique d’Asimov qui veut qu’un robot ne doit pas faire de mal à son maître. Of het in de praktijk echt gebruikt gaat worden, moet nog worden afgewacht, maar de technologie is er: akoestische barcodes. Onderzoekers aan de Carnegie Mellon University hebben een manier gevonden om geluidstrillingen om te zetten in informatie. De onderzoekers hebben de code verwerkt in een streepjespatroon dat op hout of plastic wordt aangebracht. Als men daar met zijn vinger of met de telefoon overheen gaat, kan een computer of smartphone het geluid aan de hand van de golfvorm decoderen. Het voordeel ten opzichte van visuele barcodes is dat er geen scanners meer aan te pas komen, maar de bezwaren liggen voor de hand: echt prettig is het niet om je smartphone of vingernagels te beschadigen.

Pour attirer de nouveaux touristes, la ville de Lisbonne a décidé d'utiliser la techniques des QR codes, rapporte le site Vanksen.
