The FDA has entered into the federal register a new draft guidance pertaining to "software as a medical device" (SaMD).
Investment in digital pathology and in data collection will be essential if diagnostic services are to be able to cope in the future, according to a leading charity’s report.Cancer Research UK’s investigation into pathology, published last week, has nine recommendations that include funding the infrastructure required for digital pathology and investing in technology so data can be sent to the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset.Otherwise, the report paints a bleak picture of the future of the sector, with overstretched and overworked pathologists, issues with the recruitment and retention of staff, and a health service “struggling” to cope with increasing demand.

Patient engagement leads us to better, safer, less expensive, and more flexible ways for managing healthcare’s complex tasks. It’s common sense, right? If you’re engaged in your own care and personally accountable to yourself and others, you’re more likely to invest the time and energy to achieve health and well-being in your life. It’s tempting to believe this simple truth is the only truth to the matter. But as we know, healthcare is more complicated that. The New England Journal of Medicine in May announced survey results which show that only 9% of healthcare executives report high levels of engagement across more than 3/4 of their patient population. The authors suggest that we haven’t yet discovered optimal ways of achieving high rates of sustained patient engagement – which is itself startling, considering how much interest there is in this area.

The healthcare digital transformation market is increasing, and Research and Markets added a report on the market to its offering this year. The study included surveys of IT decision makers across multiple industry to indicate what drives IT investment solutions as well as IT-related changes in the organization. The report found:
1. The top challenges for IT in healthcare include ensuring network stability and reliability, security threats and aligning IT with business strategy.
2. The biggest driver in IT investments for healthcare is reducing costs, followed by expanding into new markets and boosting creativity and innovation.
3. The companies reporting strongest revenue growth were focused on improving customer experience and attracting and retaining the workforce more than those with the moderate revenue growth rates.
4. The smaller companies reported value in social media management and marketing tools in addition to digital marketing.
5. CEOs were concerned with improving the customer experience, gaining a competitive advantage and boosting collaboration.
6. CIOs were most interested in improving productivity and sales as well as market effectiveness.
7. Around 35 percent of the respondents said they have internal deployments and live services with customers, distributors and suppliers with the internet of things. Another 28 percent reported embedded IoT in their core services and products.
