Uno de los mensajes principales de las reuniones fue la creciente dimensión global del sector oleícola. En las últimas seis décadas, tanto la producción como el consumo mundial de aceite de oliva se han triplicado y cerca del 45% del consumo ya se produce fuera de los países tradicionalmente productores, mientras que el cultivo del olivo se ha extendido a los cinco continentes. En este contexto, el director ejecutivo del COI, Jaime Lillo, subrayó que el aceite de oliva ha dejado de ser un producto exclusivamente mediterráneo para convertirse en un alimento de alcance mundial, lo que exige reforzar la cooperación internacional y mantener estándares de calidad cada vez más sólidos.

El representante del Reino subrayó que el COI continúa su misión en un entorno internacional caracterizado por importantes desafíos, en particular los efectos del cambio climático, la preservación de los recursos naturales, el fortalecimiento de la sostenibilidad de los sistemas de producción, la mejora de la calidad y la autenticidad de los productos oleícolas, así como la ampliación del consumo mundial de aceite de oliva y de aceitunas de mesa.

Jaime Lillo, director ejecutivo del Consejo Oleícola Internacional (COI), destacó la relevancia del encuentro, al recalcar que “durante los últimos días de junio y los primeros de julio, Lisboa se convertirá en la capital de la comunidad internacional del aceite de oliva. Será un encuentro extraordinario que reunirá a representantes de los principales países productores de aceite de oliva y aceituna de mesa, así como a productores, exportadores, importadores, empresas líderes del sector y miembros de la comunidad científica”. Según Lillo, el Congreso será “una oportunidad única para dialogar sobre los principales desafíos y contribuir a las soluciones que necesita el sector olivarero internacional”.
