Upper Makefield Jet Fuel Pipeline Spill Undetected for 16 Months! Bucks Residents Want It Shut Down

A pipeline leak in the township tainted water in six wells. A preliminary federal investigation found it was undetected for at least 16 months.

Upper Makefield Township residents affected by a pipeline leak that tainted the water of six wells with jet fuel continued to question pipeline operator Sunoco and its parent company Energy Transfer at a meeting Thursday (Feb 13, 2025) night.

According to Sunoco, as of Thursday, the third-party water testing company they hired has performed 127 water tests and received results for 92. Six of the 92 results contained hydrocarbons, a toxic chemical, above statewide standards. An additional 102 tests are scheduled or in the process of being scheduled.

Local and state elected officials sided with residents demanding the pipeline be shut down until an investigation into the leak is complete.

johnmacknewtown's insight:

On February 11, 2025, I notified the Township Manager that a resident of the Overlook at Newtown neighborhood in Newtown township sent me an email that Sunoco Pipeline has been doing what appears to be "extensive work on the pipeline that runs behind [her] neighborhood, and behind the Eagle View neighborhood. "When I spoke with one of the contractors yesterday, he said it was routine maintenance," she said. "This seems very unlikely, given the recent leaks in Upper Makefield, and considering that the ground is currently frozen solid. They have done a large amount of digging in various areas. I would like to know if you are aware of what they're doing and why."

The Manager responded: "We have not been notified of any upgrades to the pipeline in the Township. A few years ago they did some work that required permitting through the Township." His only concern was to determine is a permit was required!

Meanwhile, David R. Nyman, the Upper Makefield Township Manager, sent an email to the Newtown Twp Manager on 13 Feb: "Not sure what you are hearing regarding the Sunoco pipeline leak in Upper Makefield, but have been advised that Sunoco is exposing a portion of the line in Newtown, along Eagle Road."
