9 Ways to Counteract Facebook's Big Algorithm Change - - The Buffer Blog

9 Ways to Counteract Facebook's Big Algorithm Change - - The Buffer Blog | Networked Nonprofits and Social Media | Scoop.it
Facebook’s ranking algorithm decides which posts get shown to each user in their News Feed. The algorithm has gone through some major changes in the past, but the most recent one has thrown a lot of social media marketers for a loop.
Beth Kanter's insight:

Facebook has tweaked the algorithm again to favor links, irking lots of nonprofit folks once again.   But, let's stop complaining about Facebook or hope that it dies a horrible death (FB might out live us all)

Here are 9 tips from marketing experts in a post by BufferApp that will lead to success.

These are:

1.) Don't give up on Facebook yet ... (nope, it isn't going to die by 2017)
2.) Focus more time on community building and engagement
3.) Use your individual profile and groups for extra reach (I use this and it is works)
4.) Keep Experimenting with new features (I'm testing link embed feature)
5.) Don't forget about "owned" media - we're just renters here on FB and many other SM channels.
6.) Use FB Page to encourage people to sign up for an email list
7.) Build audience on other platforms (don't put all your social media eggs in the FB basket) -Instagram is ripe and snapchat is the new shiny objecti dujour!

8.) Ask your followers to help

9.) Be smart about your ad dollars on Facebook (test, measure, learn)

The article has a lot of tips and links. I would set aside 30 minutes to read it and think about adding some of the tips to your strategy in a thoughtful way. I'm doing that!

Beth Kanter's insight:

On the value of Twitter and how to fit it into your day as a CEO

I speak at conferences, conduct interviews with journalists, meet with legislators, and do whatever is necessary to push the issue of inclusion onto the agenda. Like you, I have a very full schedule filled with meetings, phone calls, site visits, and still more meetings.

And then I started tweeting.

Most of my philanthropic friends and foundation colleagues do not use social media, for a variety of reasons. I myself was unsure of how effective Twitter could be in helping to change the status quo. But I embarked on this experiment six months ago to see if I can build community around the issues the foundation advocates for. I understood that it takes time to build an audience and find one’s voice online. Change does not happen overnight.

Of utmost importance was having a Twitter strategy in place. I knew in advance who the influencers I wanted to engage were and connect with, what type of content to push out. Certainly I had much to learn:  how to engage, how to effectively use the platform, when and how to post and how to conduct conversations. Through trial and error I have learned and the early results are encouraging – there has been a definite increase in the number of conversations, retweet and mentions. (Notice I didn’t mention number of followers- that’s not a metric I’m using to measure success). Additionally, my tweeting has brought increased exposure for ourfoundation’s official account and we have seen a marked upswing in trafficto our blog.

Want Success? Create high quality content and authentically engage with your audience

Want Success? Create high quality content and authentically engage with your audience | Networked Nonprofits and Social Media | Scoop.it
Beth Kanter's insight:

It is getting harder and harder to cut through the clutter.   If you want to be successful you need to create high quality content and engage with your audienes.

1.  Quality content is what your audience wants to read, not what you want to tell them

2.  Content that gets highly shared is content with hear.  This is about real stories, not messaing.

3. Take the time to engage   Be present, be a trusted part of the conversation.

This is not new advice, but it is timeless.

How To Build The Perfect Tumblr Profile For Business

How To Build The Perfect Tumblr Profile For Business | Networked Nonprofits and Social Media | Scoop.it
Tumblr is one of those content marketing platforms that many businesses do not understand. Use this blueprint to create your profile and get started reaching your customers!
Beth Kanter's insight:

If you are trying to reach millennials, than Tumblr might be a good channel for you.

Tumblr, with its Instagram-meets-blogging positioning, is a channel that is under-represented by many brands. Somewhere between 30 and 300 million Millennial consumers (yes, it’s a big spread) and others value this vast visual destination to consume and curate content. It’s a great place to get to know brand better. Tumblr is certainly not the last-touch in the B2B or B2C sales funnel. However, it is a great destination along the buyer journey.
