Clare's insight:
So Ambrose isn't the first woman with a man's name in 'Doctor Who'. Clearly a selective (geek-focused) spotlight on the name, which has taught me a couple of new things. Every day's a school day.
Update: if you like Idris, see also Naming the Fishes' post: http://namingthefishes.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/idris
We hebben de toplijsten van 2012 uit Nederland, België, Duitsland en Zweden al gehad. Vandaag iets exotischers: de populairste voornamen van Finland. Ik zeg
Clare's insight:
The most popular names given to children in Finland (with a separate list for Swedes in Finland) in 2012. What stands out for me is that, even among so many Finnish names, there's no getting away from Oliver and Olivia.
Did your favorite baby names win the March Madness contest in 2013? Read on to see who went home with the trophy ...
Clare's insight:
Wow, what stiff competition! I really thought the other boys' name was going to win; and I'm pleased that my preferred girls' name won by a single vote.
The best sites for baby name inspiration.
Clare's insight:
Thanks to Blue Juniper for drawing attention to this list. I've been aware of and covering about two thirds of the blogs mentioned, and I'm glad to learn about the rest for even more naming Scoops.
Clare's insight:
A little more contemplation of Miss Lincoln (including nickname possibilities). Clearly the surname springs to mind first, but I think it fits equally well with place name trends. If girls can be called London, Bristol and Trafford, then, arguably, why not Lincoln? It does have a lovely cathedral.

This is the last post in our How to Master Middle Name series. You can find other posts in this series here. Let’s take a moment to discuss name flow. But before we even talk about flow, some discu...
Clare's insight:
Angela explains what some think of as the dark art of middle name "flow". Certainly good for explaining some of the reasons why people sometimes worry about flow, though I firmly agree with the closing thought:
"if you find you love a combo that breaks the rules, then I say go for it."

Clare's insight:
Some nice suggestions - I have a particularly soft spot for Pascal.
Clare's insight:
Here's food for thought: what if surnames became fixed now, rather than eight hundred (or however many in other parts of the world) years ago?
For a start, I suspect they wouldn't follow the male line so rigidly. On the other hand, they might well be based around similar things: occupation, dwelling-place, appearance, family ties, personality. Maybe new things now, like hobbies or friendships or achievements. Writing a lost of possible surnames suddenly becomes a very reflective exercise.
I've been trying to get my daughters interested in some of the books I liked when I was a kid—my favorites were Nancy Drew, Ramona and Beezus, and the Little
Clare's insight:
Take the "meanings" with a pinch of salt, but fine as a short list of names from modern children's books.
Nori is a traditional Japanese name element and a surprisingly international pick. Could she be modern stand-alone choice for an American girl in 2013?
Clare's insight:
Not forgetting the list of dwarf-names in (?I think) Vǫluspá. |

How exciting that Geek Baby Names does a monthly round-up. I'm learning lots now it's the end of the month!
From Arabic gem, to operatic heroine. Once Zara was associated as a princess name; now it practically is.
Clare's insight:
http://howmanyofme.com is indeed quite fun to play with. For instance, surprisingly, there's only one person in the US with my name (and it's not me).

Read all about it! The second issue of Matilda is out, and I'm about to read it.
PS Isn't it groovy how you can read the magazine (albeit in miniature) here on Scoop.it? I never knew it did that..!
Good Things Happening at Baby Name Pondering
Clare's insight:
Congratulations, Blue Juniper - on the article, the list mention, and the nomination. Now let's all go and read 'Matilda'!
Clare's insight:
It's interesting how everyone's doing a different take on Easter-related names. We've had rabbits, and now flowers. Also interesting to see discussion of Aster so soon after WMTM thought it unusual to see it on a boy.
Clare's insight:
I don't endorse the expression "very unique", but there are certainly some unusual and distinctive names in this list.

We already know about Easter Lily Gates and Mirabella Bunny Adams, but what other Easter babies have been given very holiday-specific baby names?
Clare's insight:
If Easter alone is too subtle, why not Easter Day or Easter Sunday? Nice list of seasonal first and middle names.
Looking to name your baby after a bunny? Famous rabbit names abound! Just in time for Easter, here's Harvey, Reese, and of course, Peter.
Clare's insight:
A fun alternative to Easter names...I'd never realised how many dignified rabbit names there are out there!
A selection of names from the GRO Birth Records for England and Wales in 1862. All are first names and middle names — the surnames are not included unless indicated by 'sn' — and have been checked against other records for accuracy.

Intercydony, Farewell, and many more treasures!
A baby born into California's Yorba family is named Linda -- Linda Yorba of Yorba Linda.
Clare's insight:
"She’d be Linda Yorba from Yorba Linda. And we all thought that was so hysterical. So of course, I named the baby Linda–it just came out of my mouth"
