Clare's insight:
I honestly didn't think of the song until I read the article...and frankly, who cares if that was the inspiration or not? Go Stanley!
For the American readers, this name may initially seem a tad amusing, but for the British one, it's borderline vulgar, but thousands of French girls to this day answer to the name Fanny. As a young...
Clare's insight:
Several thoughts about this post: 1. How interesting, I hadn't heard of Fanny Adams before. 2. My unerstanding is that "frank" did once literally mean "free" or "free man" (like franklin)

I'm very fond of the name David, it's a hard act to follow. Some lovely classic names being mooted in here.
Does anyone remember Girl Talk? It's a British magazine aimed at girls aged (I'd guess) 8-11, and I read it avidly in the late 1990s. Apparently it's still going. As well as reading it, I also us...
Clare's insight:
Here's one from me! I don't usually blog about names (or much else, for that matter), but was inspired by finding some of my childhood name-lists. This one was all the girls' and women's names in a magazine I used to read.
Clare's insight:
I agree with the Name Lady, although would also suggest considering poets' first names to widen the options. For example, Ezra (Pound) or Emily (Dickinson et al).

Clare's insight:
Thanks to Abby of Appellation Mountain for mentioning this post - just reading it makes me, well, happy!
With all the state and territory data out before Easter, this seems the perfect time to cover those questions people have asked about name popularity. In a way, it's a bit pointless, because all th...
Clare's insight:
It's true, sometimes the questions are just as interesting as the answers. (Banjo?) |
Kate and Sarah have a new issue of Matilda magazine out. They are having a few problems with their website at present, but the second issue of Matilda looks great. There's sage advice from Abby at ...
Clare's insight:
Anna's article is great, another reason to look at the latest 'Matilda'.
Clare's insight:
Interesting to know. I could say "Holly Golightly" all day (but my neighbours might find it weird after a while)
Clare's insight:
(NB not all of Irish-language origins, but all in established use in Ireland)
Clare's insight:
Argues that Ralph is ready for a comeback.
Anyone else catch last night's premiere of Game of Thrones? I'll have a full writeup tomorrow of my favorite names from this crazy fantasy series, but my cool
A list of interesting names I found at Biography.com.
Clare's insight:
Do you know, I've long enjoyed saying Tycho Brahe's name, and was thinking about it only yesterday. What I like about this list is that the names aren't just cheap comedy (well, maybe a couple); they're apparently ones that someone has seen and thought "oh, that's a good name!"
She's a sassy short name with roots in Scotland and Greece. Move over, Sadie and Hattie! The ladylike Effie is on the rise.
Clare's insight:
Hurrah for Effie (as a nickname), and hurrah for Euphemia! I'm really backing the underdog Eu- names to return.
Clare's insight:
A list of horse-related names. Not forgetting our old friends Hengest and Horsa :)
Clare's insight:
More (ok, occasionally tenuous) takes on Easter-themed names.
Kanye West, who joked that he was considering the name North for his firstborn with Kim Kardashian, is the latest celebrity to show his fondness for noun names.
Clare's insight:
A little more about noun names (to be taken with a Daily Mail-sized pinch of salt!)
Clare's insight:
Another mention for the latest issue of 'Matilda', by the author of an interesting feature about names in Jane Austen's novels. |
