One cool part of running the In Name Only blog is getting to talk about baby names with some of the top naming experts in the country. And I love nothing more
"Every once in a while I come across a really striking set of names — where it's not so much the individual names that stand out, but the way they play off one another."

Here they are again (with figures).

Clare's insight:
Fair question, and good comments (and mythbusting) so far from people who've been in this situation.
Have you noticed that the 2012 baby name data is up at the Social Security Administration site? I always think I'm going to have a lot to say about it, and then the data is finally here and I can't...

How did Swistle's favourite names fare?
"Each year, thousands of names vie for our attention in movies, television, music, headline news and more. How does one name step up to win the hearts of hundreds of expectant parents? This year, the recipe boils down to two words:"

"by Isadora Vega of Bewitching Baby Names I have found a catalogue of old birth certificates of Romani (Gypsy) children with their parent’s names."
Clare's insight:
It's hard to pick out just a couple of examples from this list, as there are so many good'uns. In the virtues corner alone, we've got Charity, Defiance, Freedom, Mercy, Patience, Unity, Liberty, Surrender, and Wisdom. But that is not all, oh no that is not all. |
"It's that time of the year, name-lovers — the 2012 statistics from the Social Security Administration are due to be released at the end of this week. The top 10 is looking to see some changes. Is this the year Jacob will end its 12-year reign as the #1 boy name?"
Clare's insight:
Whoops, a bit belated, but good to read in the light of the data.

"One thing I haven’t seen addressed yet, though, is whether or not the mere existence/availability of this data has influenced (or maybe accelerated) baby naming trends. Is today’s baby name data less “pure” than it used to be now that so many people are using the data itself to make decisions about baby names? Hm…"
"Kelli Brady, creator of NameFreak!, combined spelling variations to come up with the real top 50 names on the new US popularity list. Her results show some names vastly more popular than it seems and a new Number 1 and Number 2 for boys."
Clare's insight:
Again, hooray for people who analyse the data!
Zoe and Chloe are popular, and Penelope is climbing fast. Are there other ends-with-e names from Greek myth to consider? Daphne, Ismene, or Ione, anyone?
Clare's insight:
I never say no to a list of Greek names, especially when it contains Danaë, Circe and Evadne. "The Social Security Administration unveiled its list of 2012's most popular baby names on Thursday, and while clear favorites Emma and Jacob still top the list, some of the biggest jumpers in popularity are ones entrenched in pop culture."

"The new list is out! Nothing has drastically changed on top... Jacob and Sophia are still #1. But there are some interesting things beyond the top for sure!

"Outside the top-1,000 name lists, names can rise and fall fast without making much of an impression in America's nurseries. A dozen babies might move a name a thousand slots in the rankings. But the biggest movers and shakers outside the top 1,000 can still tell stories. And this year, the story they tell is Cataleya. Cataleya, Cataleya, CATALEYA!"
Clare's insight:
Interesting observations on trends that the SSA trend statistics don't highlight.

A snippet from the new 'Baby Name Wizard' book.
"The hottest boys' names of the year are no shriking violets. The rise of names like King, Major and Messiah takes our era of bold meaning names to a new level. And that's just one of the big stories in this year's rising boys' names."
