"In the last two months of my pregnancy I went quite bonkers about stuff. No wait, not just stuff, but the right stuff, quality stuff. I think this is what some people refer to as 'nesting',"
Clare's insight:
Welcome to Sam, brother to Kitty and son to two British journalists. (Disclaimer: this post isn't actually about names.)
"This list represents a good mix of modern and old-fashioned. At least three of the names have styles that seem to tie the past to the present: Annalee, Everly, and Jessa. And the two compound names suggest an emerging trend. The big letter seems to be E, a vowel that has always been prominent in many names, but could be getting more popular as a starting letter."
"The big news in baby names this week has been the Most Popular Names 2012: Top 1, Top 10, Top 100, Top 1000. But swimming just below the surface — not quite on the radar but not truly off, either — are dozens of more unusual baby names poised to find wider favor….or dropping from view."

I don't condone laughing at people's names, or name choices, but it shows that children's TV is a good source of interesting names. Via Lansky (http://babynamesinthenews.com/2013/05/14/hilarious-mothers-day-baby-name-rant-from-jef-with-one-f/)
How does one name step up to win the hearts of hundreds of expectant parents? This year, the recipe boils down to two words: Beautiful and deadly.
Clare's insight:
A little more on those climbers.

Caspian is a handsome figure from fiction, and a mysterious inland sea. If you're after a romantic, but wearable name for a son, look no further.
Clare's insight:
Very educational - I've learned where the name Narnia came from, and some of the species unique to the Caspian sea. Must admit to a slight preference for Cassian.

"There are some interesting finds at the lower end of the 2012 SSA baby name list. The only qualifications required to make the following list were that the name was on the beyond 1000 list in 2012 but not in 2011, and that it caught my eye."
Clare's insight:
Nice list - some place names, some celebrity names, some virtues and titles, and a lot of pop culture love.

Well-predicted, and shame that Merida didn't crack the top 1000. ('Game of Thrones' fans might have a small nitpick.)

Nicoline is among the rarest of the Nicholas/Nicole options, but with her Northern European roots and that stylish -ine ending, she could wear well in 2013.
Clare's insight:
It does indeed have a longer history than I had realised. I wonder if spellings like Nicolyn would appeal, too.
"by Eleanor Nickerson of British Baby Names Manx is one of the six Celtic languages that hail from the British isles. It is the native language of the Isle of Man, an island uniquely situated between the coasts of Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales."
Clare's insight:
Whichever way you throw them, they stand. A very interesting list, and remember, next time you meet a Lilee, a Grayse, or a Juan pronounced "JOO-un", don't assume they're creative spellings; they could be Manx.
"Why do I call this the Playground Analysis? Well, when you are on the playground with your kids and you hear a name, you don't know how it is spelled, but you do know how often you hear it. Some names might actually be more popular than the SSA list shows because it ranks names by their spelling, not by their sound."
Clare's insight:
In case you missed this bit of data-crunching - and look at the snazzy new blog design.
"My husband and I would like to name our child Patrick Irish G_____(last name)."
"Rubeus is the Latin word for 'Red'. It does not appear in SSA's name database, making it a very rare name."
