About Wildly Popular Names—Like Jacob

Just read an interesting article by Laura Wattenberg, proving (with the aid of convincing charts) that usage of an extremely popular (#1-rated name like Jacob) peaks when it achieves #1 status and ...
Clare's insight:

"If everybody else likes it, you don’t really like it."  Lansky is on a mission to prevent the world at large from using popular names, and to undertake telepathy while he's at it.  (Miaow!  Apologies.  Moving swiftly on...)

Heartbroken that Addison and Amelia are so popular?  Did your best friend just name her daughter Aria Alexandra, stealing two of your long-time favorites?  Never fear!  Here are some of my favorite A names for girls – and none of them currently rank in the US Top 1000."

Jacob: The Amazing True Story of a Number-One Name | Name News | Scoop.it

"remember that those rankings don't mean the same thing they did when you were a kid. 'Popular' is very, very relative."

Clare's insight:

Not dissimilarly from Elizabeth (see Nancy's post below), while Jacob has remained at the same rank, its relative use has decreased.

Australian Baby Names: Focus on Banjo

Australian Baby Names: Focus on Banjo | Name News | Scoop.it

Banjo is a uniquely Australian name; one which seems strange in other countries, yet cozy and familiar in our own. It’s patriotic, and honours one of our most beloved national poets.  It’s cute, cool, and has a very Aussie nickname too – Joey.

Clare's insight:

A fascinating and rather moving look at a man important to Australian history and national identity.  It's changed the way I see the name Banjo from now on.

Finds from 1863 - British Baby Names

Finds from 1863 - British Baby Names | Name News | Scoop.it
A selection of names from the GRO Birth Records for England and Wales in 1863. All are first names and middle names — the surnames are not included unless indicated by 'sn' — and have been checked against other records for accuracy.
Clare's insight:

What a treasure trove.  Just a few of the things I'm enjoying about this list:

What looks to modern eyes like gender-crossing (a boy called Anstice, a girl called Brock)

Commemorative names (Princess Alexandra, Napoleon, Wellington)

Titles as names, currently receiving a lot of media attention in the US and New Zealand (Squire, Prince)

Virtues (Repentance, Admonisha)

Names that aren't as new-fangled as you might think (Alivia, Jessina, Anderson)

The very long and elaborate (Chrysidus Adelbert Isadore Cyrus De'Lys)

Lovely antiquarian revivals (Etheldred, Aldred)

Unusual biblical choices (Hadderreezar, Mahershalalhashbaz)

The, er, somewhat comical (Strange Livings, Cloudsley Shovel Henry)

I could go on but I'd better stop.

Stana: Baby Name of the Day - Appellation Mountain | Name News | Scoop.it
She's a Slavic import made famous by a Serbian-Canadian actress, and feels a little bit like a feminine form of Stanley, too. Could Stana catch on in 2013?
Clare's insight:

I must admit this name reminded me of declining nouns in Old English classes (strong masculine genitive plural!).  But I'm glad to know about Stana's real origins.

NameFreak!: When Variations Surpass Originals

NameFreak!: When Variations Surpass Originals | Name News | Scoop.it

"I am a huge fan of classic names. And while there are always exceptions, I prefer original spellings (which is funny since my name is Kelli). In looking at the 2012 Top 1000, I have found several variations of names that have surpassed their originals."

Clare's insight:

While some originals are debatable, others are fairly unquestionable, and either way it's an interesting comparison of which spellings (or the cultures they represent) are more popular.
