A medieval relic that's shrouded in legend. Ismeria is certainly obscure, but it's one that asks many questions.
Clare's insight:
Knock knock. Who's there? Ismeria. Ismeria who? Is Mary a better-known name than Ismeria? It certainly is.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. In this fascinating post, we delve into the middle ages, taking in legends on John the Baptist, the crusades, the cult of the Black Madonna, and a remarkable African woman at the heart of it all.

Welcome, Jem! Lovely name.

When it comes to nature-inspired baby names, there are good choices, bad choices and awesome choices. Let nature cartoonist Rosemary Mosco, creator of Bird and Moon comics, be your guide.

I wouldn't want to disagree with this. NB The preview doesn't show the whole picture; worth clicking into.

Clare's insight:
This week we have Lu Lu, hipster names, the origins of Momo Fali, Scottish national identity, Ivory Hunter, a film-inspired name vetoed, names as front-page news, rejecting names as too popular before they've become popular, a feel-good Italian name, Neda Ulaby's connotations, and a news reporter's attitude to his common name. The weekend starts here!
Summer movie names range from the invented Kitai to the classic Constance. Will a blockbuster launch Henley,
Dageraad, Bazel, Haywire en Boateng zijn een paar van de opvallendste voornamen die Vlaamse ouders hun kind afgelopen maand gaven. Mijn favoriet: Ibrahim Sorry Ben.
Clare's insight:
It's hard to pick just a few examples from this illustrious list, but I'll try. Featuring Floribert, Toots, Chiara di Luna, and oh look, a Cattleya...and more.
My husband and I never dwelled on naming our babies. Before kids, we decided we liked the girl-name Zoe because it was short, it sounded zippy and it seemed like it described a kind, free-spirited soul.

A no-frills approach to naming, and the discovery of living in a Ryan-pocket.
An essay in The New York Times shows just how annoying today's parents can be when it comes to picking out preciously special, original, unique baby names.

"Today's Name of the Day is the Latin boy's name Augustus. For years, this name was considered somewhat fusty, or even pretentious. Today, parents are seeing it differently."

"Lately I've been hearing more and more of this name. I have to admit, I didn't instantly fall in love with Ember. But it's definitely growing on me."
Clare's insight:
Some good arguments in favour of Ember (and a lovely quotation at the end). To add a reference worthy of Geek Baby Names, I'm fairly sure a female Ember was one of the founders of the mage school on Roke, in 'Tales from Earthsea' by Ursula Le Guin. Ah, now, names from Earthsea would make a good post, wouldn't it?
