"If you like the idea of a literary name for your child, Brooke Cussans of Baby Name Pondering suggests that you don't have to be limited to the names of favorite authors or characters: you can use evocative word names associated with books and reading."
There's a new generation of names popular in Paris, all fresh and chic-sounding beyond the French borders. Will they translate to the English-speaking world? The Francophiles among us might like to try.
Clare's insight:
I can't remember if we've seen this already...I have a feeling maybe, but never mind: you can never have too much Manon and Clemence.
"Ooh, I’m seeing more cohesive sets pop out at me from the 900s than I did with the 800s. What’s your favorite centennial for 2012?"
Clare's insight:
Hugh, Alfred, Reuben, Tess - what are all these names doing down in the 900s? America, sort it out.
"...choosing a name for your child inspired by a place you've actually been to and that means a lot to you may not be easy. In an attempt to name five babies based on place names that mean something to me, I give you a little piece of me."
Clare's insight:
Agreed, our favourite places don't always make great personal names. I really liked reading Kelli's insight into some special places that she would consider using.
After a bit of thought (and bending the rules to include rivers and buildings), my 5 are Gwynedd, Ridgeway, Brittany, Cam, and Pax.
Update: just a few days later, Nameberry asks a similar question: http://nameberry.com/blog/whats-your-favorite-place-name
A handful of quake-inspired baby names following the 2013 Lushan earthquake in China.
She's regal and spirited, a French appellation that feels just right in 2013. Don't you just love Josephine?
"This week for her Nameberry 9, Appellation Mountain‘s Abby Sandel proves that baby names can come from anywhere ."
"Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles and wife Danneel Ackles welcomed a little girl last month. They named her Justice Jay Ackles and plan to call her JJ. "
Clare's insight:
Though if Justice is #518 for girls and #519 for boys, surely that makes in unisex rather than androgynous?
"...names aren’t made up. Not really. They’re introduced. And introducing anything new is dicey. We don’t know how to say it or spell it. We’re not sure what it means. We might stumble over gender. Names aren’t created as much as they’re discovered and understood, integrated into the fabric of our language. It might be very difficult to wear one of those jagged, new names that hasn’t been washed down to wearable smoothness by the sea of language."
Clare's insight:
Happy Sunday, everyone! If you don't fancy scrolling down this page, just look at the best bits of the week (including me - thank you!).
" I frequent some forums that have name-nerds like me posting all of their "guilty pleasure" names, as well as names they would seriously use for a child. While I can't help but love the general vibe and uniqueness of the names they list, it leaves me wondering about how usable these names really are."
Clare's insight:
A list of some "guilty pleasure" girls' names gleaned from forums - as always, it's interesting how the same name might be eminently usable to some and far too whimsical/exotic to others.
A lot of times, parents end up with two front-runners on their baby name list – both equally good choices, both equally loved. They're usually fairly similar in style and popularity, which makes it... |
"Looking for a name for a baby due this month? Here's a wide selection of June-related names--from Juniper to Juno, Josie to Jarlath. You'll find names related to the sound of June, the birthstones of June, June saints' days, and even names commemorating Bloomsday from James Joyce's 'Ulysses.'"
Clare's insight:

"Does Clark Kent still signify a pencil-necked dweeb you’d never ever suspect could be a superhero in disguise? Is Lois the perfect name for a quintessentially modern career gal?"
"We had been trying for years to get pregnant and we finally did. My coworker and his wife got pregnant shortly after us. This coworker is super competitive..."
Clare's insight:
Blimey, it takes office politics to a whole nother level.

Clare's insight:
And Jayce Red Hawk, Ulises Orlando, and more.
"Amazing abilities aside, another running theme throughout the show was the mystery surrounding MacGyver's given name."
Clare's insight:
As I read this, I got very worried that MacGyver's real name would never be revealed, leaving us forever wondering. Fortunately, that's not the case - and his name's not bad at all!
The situation is very similar in 'Inspector Morse' (but don't worry, as with MacGyver, we do eventually find out what his name is).
"Eleanor Nickerson of British Baby Names unearths the secret meanings of a wide variety of flower names. Did you know that Ivy means friendship?"
Clare's insight:
Ah, the language of flowers! Your qualities surpass your charms. I surmount all difficulties. I declare war against you. And there are some lovely names here too (I have a soft spot for Clematis).

Clare's insight:
Welcome, Frankie and Zach! (And another picture of a butch man and a tiny baby.)
Anyone else catch the Tonys tonight? (Or were you all watching Game of Thrones? I admit I had to switch off Neil Patrick Harris and crew for an hour or so to

A compilation of names from BAs announced in this week's newspapers. Sibling names are in brackets.
Clare's insight:
Ah, one of the highlights of the week - not least because it saves me a trip to the library to look at the papers myself. This week we have Izzy Mai, Millie Mae, Nina Rae, Patsy-J, Violet May, and more.
Zuid-Afrika was in 1938 in de ban van de herdenking van de Grote Trek honderd jaar eerder. Mannen lieten hun baarden staan, vrouwen hulden zich in klederdracht en kinderen werden gedoopt vanaf de ossenwagen.
Clare's insight:
South Africa in the 1930s: some Boer children were named in honour of the centenary of the Great Trek (a migration that led to the founding of the Boer Republics), and in honour of contemporary European leaders.
