These short days of winter seem like the perfect time to cover names which are diminutives, nicknames, pet names, and short forms of names, but can also be used as full names. Annika Annika is a Sw...
Clare's insight:
Some sweet names here (Romy and Jinty, for example), and very interesting background info as usual. And a poll.

A compilation of names from BAs announced in this week's newspapers. Sibling names are in brackets.
Clare's insight:
It's very hard to pick out just a couple of highlights this week, but here goes: siblings Noah, Oswin, Reuben, Rhoda and Gabriel; Hector, Thorfinn, Arianwen, Annice, Tulip, Xanthippe, and more.
Hij moet in het vooroorlogse Amsterdam een begrip zijn geweest: dokter Bernard Wolff Beffie, arts voor blaas- en geslachtsziekten. Zijn naam leeft nog altijd
Clare's insight:
On a Jewish doctor from Amsterdam who went by his second surname, which lives on as a euphemism for his area of specialism. 'Bef' also appears to be a Dutch slang word for a particular act between partners. (Do correct me if I've got something wrong here.)
"Dale remains a sleek, understated but potentially stately choice. For a girl, it has a similar feel to preppy choices Greer and Sloane. On a boy, it can be likened to modern classics Reed, Blake and Logan. It would be a shame to see Dale fall further into disuse."
"Baby names that pay homage to a compass are not new. Recently the names Easton and Weston in particular have taken off among all sort of parents, including celebrities. It’s obvious that the big surprise with Kanye and Kim’s unconfirmed baby name news is the combination of her first and last name. If Kim and Kanye were looking for a brandable, shocking name that would have us talking for years to come, they hit the nail on the head."
"Blessed Solstice, everyone! It's the perfect time to profile the name of one of the few sun goddesses!"
We have babies named Easton and Weston. Could North be the hot new directional name? In honor of the Kimye birth announcement, let's look at North.
Clare's insight:
The idea of North.
"Honestly, given those parents and their perspective on human existence, I think North West is just about the most brilliant hashtag keyword Google search-thwarting baby name in the history of the Celebrity Infotainment Industrial Complex."
Clare's insight:
Good point!

"Ace is a great nickname for a boy! Of course a lot of boys get called this without it having any root int heir name, just like nicknames like Bud or Guy. Ace has very positive connotations. It is the "#1" of the card deck. In WWI, the best fighter pilots earned the label "Ace". Wouldn't it be cool if this could be a nickname based on a given name?"
Clare's insight:
There are some, well, ace names here. Asaph is a name I hadn't thought of before, despite knowing of the lovely and tiny city of St Asaph's in Wales. And I'd love to meet a real-life Horace (or Horatio, I'm not picky).
Her name might be polarizing, but little North West should have no trouble adjusting to her magnetic moniker, several of her namesakes say.
Clare's insight:
Here's a nice feature on other people called North West. They all seem pretty happy.
