Project overview
As part of our vision for greater connections and incidental learning at our Bentley campus, Curtin saw the need for a vibrant and public realm at the heart of the northern sector of the future Greater Curtin. It is to be a shared space giving greater priority to pedestrian and bicycle access in an attractive, landscaped environment that exists not just for staff and students, but for the wider community engaging with Greater Curtin.

This is why many of our youth turn to technology. They aren’t addicted to the computer; they’re addicted to interaction, and being around their friends. Children, and especially teenagers, don’t want to only socialize with parents and siblings; they want to play with their peers. That’s how they make sense of the world. And we’ve robbed them of that opportunity because we’re afraid of boogeymen.
We’re raising our children in captivity and they turn to technology to socialize, learn and decompress. Why are we blaming the screens?

The Innovation Studio is a collaborative workspace that is designed for the production of e-learning platform solutions to Curtin University’s teaching and learning needs, and the potential commercialization of those solutions. Promising solutions are accepted for incubation if there is potential to create a successful business, commercialize the solution and take it to scale, while at the same time meeting Curtin’s mission and objectives. The Studio is supported and managed by Curtin Teaching and Learning, under the Executive sponsorship of the DVC Education, in partnership with IP Commercialization. Each project accepted for research, development and business incubation is created with four primary groups of partners: Curtin Staff Members who have both creative ideas and unique knowledge and skills needed to develop the solution, Curtin Teaching and Learning who will manage and shape the solution, External Partners such as businesses and funding sources that may be needed, and Curtin IP Commercialization, which will direct the early stages of business development.

As we oppose the hegemony of standardized tests, the budget cuts, the school closures, the pro-charter legislation, the infiltration of Teach For America, and other privatization schemes, we also should demand teaching and learning conditions that allow us to create an alternative vision of classroom life. In order to design curriculum that speaks to students’ lives, we need more prep time, more time for teacher collaboration, more professional development worthy of its name. We need to nurture a grassroots conversation about social justice teaching—one that refutes the notion that learning and high test scores are synonymous; and one that opts for joy over misery.
Rethinking Schools encourages teachers to continue to subvert the test-and-punish system by doing everything we can to teach for the benefit of our students—and the world. Every child-centered, socially aware lesson plan is a gesture of defiance to those who endeavor to make test scores the sole criterion of educational success. This kind of teaching that matters is part of the broader struggle to defend and transform public schools.

Other Liberals opposed to same-sex marriage also hit back at the proponents of the bill.
Frontbencher Concetta Fierravanti-Wells called the move an “ambush” that “played into the hands of the government’s political opponents”, the ABC reported.

Universities have been warned their funding will be cut by 20% almost immediately, an average of $32 million a university, if the government can get its higher education reform package through the Senate by the end of the year. The legislation, rejected by the Senate in March, was due to be reintroduced during the budget sittings of Parliament but has been left to “lie fallow” as education minister Christopher Pyne presumably cultivates the Senate crossbenchers. Most informed commentary is that the legislation has little prospects of passing in its present form. So will the government amend the bill? Perhaps, but it would be deprived of a double dissolution trigger if government does amend it. We don’t think a double dissolution is likely – it’s way too complicated and high risk – but holding the legislation back keeps the option open, and Pyne himself raised the prospect in his negotiations with the crossbenchers in March.

When you use Google Public DNS, you are changing your DNS "switchboard" operator from your ISP to Google Public DNS. In most cases, the IP addresses used by your ISP's domain name servers are automatically set by your ISP via the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). To use Google Public DNS, you need to explicitly change the DNS settings in your operating system or device to use the Google Public DNS IP addresses. The procedure for changing your DNS settings varies according to operating system and version (Windows, Mac or Linux) or the device (computer, phone, or router). We give general procedures here that might not apply for your OS or device; please consult your vendor documentation for authoritative information.

Special Report Duncan Campbell has spent decades unmasking Britain's super-secretive GCHQ, its spying programmes, and its cosy relationship with America's NSA. Today, he retells his life's work exposing the government's over-reaching surveillance, and reveals documents from the leaked Snowden files confirming the history of the fearsome ECHELON intercept project. This story is also published simultaneously today by The Intercept, as is - at long last - Duncan's Register Christmas Lecture from last year.

Mahatma Gandhi: Would his peaceful protests have put him in goal if the WA Bill is passed? The Barnett government has proposed new anti-protest laws under the Criminal Code Amendment (Prevention of Lawful Activity) Bill 2015. If passed, protesters face up to two year jail terms or fines of up to $25,000. UnionsWA believes that these unfair laws would treat working people as criminals for taking action for safer workplaces or better pay and conditions. Working with religious, environmental, legal and farming groups as well as the Labor Opposition and Greens, we've successfully put pressure on Barnett to delay the Bill. But the Bill is now due to go before the WA Parliament as soon as early August. This briefing will give you details about the Bill and outline plans for action to protect our right to protest. The briefing will be chaired by Owen Whittle, Assistant Secretary UnionsWA with the following guest speakers:

Curtin University is well on its way to achieving its 2030 vision of becoming a recognised international leader in research.
Our sustained emphasis on quality research over several years recently saw us rocket into the top two per cent of universities worldwide according to the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities. This remarkable transformation was achieved in many ways thanks to our dedicated research and professional staff and research partners.
To celebrate research at Curtin, I invite you to take part in Research Week 2015. This annual event showcases our innovation, our research strengths, capabilities and achievements, and allows our research staff to share their work and discover what other research areas in the University are accomplishing.
Throughout this five-day celebration you can attend on-campus demonstrations and presentations, find out about training opportunities, participate in career seminars and learn more about Curtin’s research support services.

“What’s problematic is you have a clash,” Hayes Jacobs said. “You have 19th-century structures and 20th-century curriculum but 21st-century learners, and we are 21st-century learners, too. The content needs an overhaul.
“Then we have 19th-century structures – we have the same school year, we are fundamentally organised, still, in classrooms. We still use grade levels to identify kids. That’s a really old idea.”

Children were two to three to a bed, some desperately ill and on ventilators. At the National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi, the intensive care unit overflowed. With waiting rooms full, anxious parents sat on the pavement outside the hospital. Most of the children were under age 5, and many were babies. Ninety percent had not been vaccinated.
Last year, Vietnam was hit with its worst measles epidemic in decades, with 30,000 suspected cases and 15,000 confirmed so far. One hundred forty-six children died.
