In a move that should electrify the clean energy movement across the country, the tireless champions with the Chicago Clean Power Coalition have announced that Midwest Generation, a subsidiary of multinational giant Edison International, will soon shut down the Windy City's two Model-T-era coal-fired plants.
The historic victory, after a decade-long battle, marks a shift in the clean energy battle for the country: If Chicago, once hailed as the "world's largest market of coal," can go coal free, the rest of the nation must surely be close behind them.

New Zealand Farming Systems Uruguay (NZFSU), which develops and runs dairy farms in Uruguay, expects to break even on an earnings before interest and tax basis in the full year to June 30.
NZFSU yesterday reported a half-year profit of US$367,000 (NZ$435,627) – moving into the black after a loss in the prior corresponding period.
For the six months to December 31, 2010, the result was a loss of US$6.77 million.
Singaporean-based food giant Olam International last year gained an 86 per cent stake in the listed company.
The offer by Olam expired in late June and it failed to get to a 90 per cent threshold of shares that would have allowed it to take 100 per cent ownership of the company. There was strong opposition from a group of minority shareholders to Olam's takeover offer of 70 cents a share.
Olam now has about an 86 per cent stake, New Zealand farmers and rural investors hold about 14 per cent.
Platinum is luring jewelers away from gold after investors pushed up bullion prices to records escaping market turmoil.
Gold surpassed platinum as the most expensive metal used in jewelry in August for the first time since December 2008. Gold demand from jewelry makers dropped 3 percent last year, according to the World Gold Council. Platinum use climbed 1.8 percent, according to an estimate by Johnson Matthey Plc (JMAT), a global marketer and distributor of the precious metal.
“Each time gold rallies and hits new key psychological levels, jewelry demand is impacted,” said David Wilson, an analyst at Citigroup Inc. in London. “The switch last year, with gold overtaking, should be supportive for platinum jewelry demand.”
Platinum jewelry’s appeal is spreading, driven by China, which accounts for about 68 percent of consumption. In India, the world’s biggest market for gold ornaments, the grayish-white metal’s popularity is gaining among young women, with the switch partly explained by the surge in gold prices, Platinum Guild International country manager Vaishali Banerjee said in Mumbai.
“All retailers are reporting a strong uptake” in India, Banerjee said. “2012 will be a stronger year for platinum.”

OIL giant Total has lodged an appeal against the withdrawal of its permit to drill exploratory wells for shale gas in the south of France.
The government withdrew drilling permissions in October after widescale summer protests about the environmental impact of the only known technique for exploiting shale gas, hydraulic fracturing.
Total Gas Shale Europe managing director Bruno Courme said at a press conference in Paris that Total "respects the law" however, he added, "our position is that the law does not justify the withdrawal of our permits".

Jun 4, 2011 CERRO CHATO, Uruguay — A plan to build a giant open pit mine has created a sharp rift between those who think Uruguay's rich agricultural land should be protected, and those wanting to exploit its wealth.
