Energy companies pledge to measure impacts of large dam projects | MOVUS Movement for a Sustainable Uruguay | Scoop.it
Critics say new scorecard to evaluate social and environmental impacts of hydropower projects serves dam builders not local communities...

Two of the world's largest energy companies committed last week to assess the impacts of their hydropower projects using new voluntary guidelines to evaluate the economic, social, and environmental consequences of big dam projects. But civil society activists denounced the protocol as an attempt to "greenwash" the industry.

BUCHAREST - A key figure of Romania's 1989 revolution, MEP Laszlo Tôkes, resigned from his party on Monday over a controversial Canadian gold mine project in northwestern Romania.

His stand centres on a particular method of extracting gold which uses cyanide to leach the precious metal from excavated material.

"As the initiator of a resolution from the European Parliament banning the use of cyanide in the mining industry, I cannot accept the attitude of my party towards the mining investment in

Climate, food pressures require rethink on water: U.N | MOVUS Movement for a Sustainable Uruguay | Scoop.it

PARIS (Reuters) -  The world's water supply is being strained by climate change and the growing food, energy and sanitary needs of a fast-growing population, according to a United Nations study that calls for a radical rethink of policies to manage competing claims.

"Freshwater is not being used sustainably," UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said in a statement. "Accurate information remains disparate, and management is fragmented ... the future is increasingly uncertain and risks are set to deepen."

Native Ecuadorans protest Amazon mining

Native Ecuadorans protest Amazon mining | MOVUS Movement for a Sustainable Uruguay | Scoop.it

Hundreds of native Ecuadorans have begun a cross-country march to protest policies by President Rafael Correa they say will result in more mining in the Amazon region and threaten the environment and their way of life.

Thursday’s protests were prompted partly by a recent agreement between Ecuador and China for industrial copper mining in the Amazon's Ecuacorriente Zamora-Chinchipe region.

The march, organised by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), a powerful umbrella group that represents natives from around the country, began in the Zamora-Chinchipe town of El Pangui, 700km south of Quito, the capital.

What the Frack is in That Water? - ProPublica | MOVUS Movement for a Sustainable Uruguay | Scoop.it
Environmentalists have repeatedly pressed regulators to compel oil and gas companies to report what chemicals they use in the drilling and fracking process. According to a 2011 congressional report, many of the chemicals used can pose a serious health risk. No one knows the exact makeup of the frack mixture, drilling muds and other stuff used at well sites, but this list breaks down the main ingredients revealed so far. Click on the chemical name for more detailed information.

Aubrey McClendon, the CEO of Chesapeake Energy, has a reputation for being a tough street-fighter, so his company’s response to my article in Rolling Stone is no surprise. (You can view the entire response here.) What is surprising is how weak it is. The company entirely dodges the article’s central point: that Chesapeake is highly-leveraged firm operated by a corporate gambler who engaged in complex scheme to profit off the illusion that America has a virtually unlimited supply of cheap natural gas.

Yanomami spokesman warns UN of mining threat

9 March 2012

Yanomami shaman and spokesman Davi Kopenawa warned the UN in Geneva this week of the dangers illegal gold mining is bringing to his people.

Davi stated that thousands of illegal miners are currently working in the Yanomami territory, destroying the rainforest, polluting rivers and putting the Indians’ lives at risk. The uncontacted Yanomami are particularly vulnerable.

The Yanomami are lobbying the Brazilian authorities to evict the miners. Despite the Indians holding protests and attending meetings, the authorities have taken no action.

Canadian Embassies Bring Journalists to Mining Convention from Countries Mired in Conflict

Canadian Embassies Bring Journalists to Mining Convention from Countries Mired in Conflict | MOVUS Movement for a Sustainable Uruguay | Scoop.it
OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 6, 2012) - This week, Canadian taxpayers will cover the costs of eleven journalists from eight Latin American countries - and Mongolia - to attend the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada's (PDAC) 2012 conference. Most of them will also make paid visits to mine sites in Quebec.
"This seems like an attempt on the part of the Canadian government to manage the message instead of seriously addressing the roots of mine conflicts in countries such as Argentina, Honduras, Guatemala, Peru and Ecuador where Canadian companies are operating," says Jen Moore, Latin America Program Coordinator for MiningWatch Canada. "Are these journalists going to go home and acknowledge that the stories they write have been sponsored by the Government of Canada? I don't think so."

Water Or Gold? Locals Across South America Protest Multinational Mining Projects

Water Or Gold? Locals Across South America Protest Multinational Mining Projects | MOVUS Movement for a Sustainable Uruguay | Scoop.it
By Chrystelle Barbier and Christine Legrand LE MONDE/Worldcrunch
LIMA/BUENOS AIRES -- In Catamarca, one of Argentina’s poorest provinces, residents are on the war path. For several weeks now, hundreds of protestors have barricaded routes near the town of Belén to oppose efforts by the multinationals Xtrata and Barrick Gold to expand production of a nearby open-pit mine called La Alumbrera.

In the neighboring province of La Rioja, residents are targeting another project, the Famatina mine, owned by the Canadian firm Osisko Mining Corporation.

“Water is more precious than gold,” is the battle cry being raised throughout Latin America by anti-mining groups that include rural peasants, ecologists and scientists. Together they complain of the negative environmental and social impacts caused by open-pit mines, which make heavy use of explosives, cyanide and fresh water. La Alumbrera consumes between 60 and 100 million liters of water per day.

In Peru, thousands of people descended upon Lima in early February for a “national march” to protest the expansion of mining concessions throughout the country. Participants say the mines threaten their local water supplies. The biggest single source of controversy is a $4.8-billion mine project called Conga, which risks emptying several lakes in the northern department of Cajamarca.

Animals are dying in gas-drilling country. Are humans next? | MOVUS Movement for a Sustainable Uruguay | Scoop.it

Lacking sufficient data to conduct an epidemiological investigation, the authors of the dead-cows study (veterinarians Michelle Bamberger and Robert Oswald, who is on the faculty at Cornell University) reviewed 25 recent cases where health problems among animals, and their owners, were suspected of being linked to natural gas drilling. They interviewed animal owners in six states affected by gas drilling: Colorado, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Since many of the individual cases are in litigation, however, details about who, where, and when are omitted from the published article.

Conflict in Alto Paraná

Source: Sodepaz.org/

Eight million hectares, half the surface area of Uruguay: That is the combined area that the government of Fernando Lugo is hoping to investigate, to determine if the lands are "ill-gotten," whose title deeds could be forged or faked or simply seized from the times of the Stroessner dictatorship. The landowners who have inundated Paraguay with transgenic soy are resisting the review, in an alliance with a parliament where Lugo is clearly in the minority. The conflict could lead to an institutional breakdown – to the sound of [army] boots.

Magui Balbuena, of the National Council of Organizations of Rural and Indigenous Workers, offers her account to Brecha Magazine of a conflict that has as its epicenter the Paraguayan department of Alto Paraná, on the border with Brazil.
