The Dutch population is expected to continue growing in the coming decades, largely due to immigration. In 2024 the population of the Netherlands is expected to cross the 18 million mark. The 19 million residents milestone will likely follow in 2039. By 2060, the Netherlands will count nearly 19.6 million residents, according to the latest forecast by Statistic Netherlands.

A package of urgent measures to reduce the level of nitrogen emissions and ground contamination was approved during a Tuesday night vote by senators in the Eerste Kamer, the upper house of Dutch parliament. The bill allows for tighter nitrogen regulations on construction projects, the reduction of nitrogen emissions from livestock, and the accelerated improvement and restoration of Natura 2000 nature sites.

Protesting farmers will not block supermarkets' distribution centers on Wednesday, the lawyer representing action group Farmers Defense Force (FDF) promised in court on Monday in summary proceedings filed by supermarket chains' organization CBL. According to the lawyer, the FDF never planned to block distribution centers and cause supermarkets to have empty shelves the week before Christmas, NOS reports.

All companies in the Netherlands that hatch chickens for meat are guilty of animal abuse, according to a not-yet-published ruling from the Ministry of Agriculture that the Volkskrant has in its possession. After hatching, nearly 500 million chicks per year run the risk of being left without food and water for an unnecessarily long time. The hatcheries have five years to rectify this, according to the newspaper. This decision follows a lengthy court procedure filed by animal welfare organization Wakker Dier in 2013.
