Back in the late 80's we (Int'l Assoc. of Marathoners_IAM) had the honor of hosting KODO.  Listening to the rhythm, you might want to practice ball/heel as you take small steps around your livingroom or computer room remembering that running is a dance. Go for the grace.

Effortless running takes some effort—and other lessons learned by a chronically injured runner at an alternative running school.
ozziegontang's insight:

Running like Life can be done gracefully or clumsily. Go for the grace:   GAPO

Danny and I go back to the mid-90's when we first met on rec.running. I was supportive of his ideas around ChiRunning. Like Danny I had taken up Tai Chi in 1981 with Master Liang in Balboa Park.  My thinking was that running was full body movement.  If I wanted to go faster, then it made sense to have synchronized movement with the entire body for each step be it a mile or a marathon.

As the image shows, the maiden on the unicycle has minimal body movement up and down.  The only thing moving up and down are her legs.  Running is in a way marching in place and allowing the body from the ankle to fall forward.

You may want to look at the concepts of Nicholas Romanov and POSE Method (posetech.com) or Natural Running with Danny Abshire at NewtonRunning.com.

A new study of barefoot tribespeople in Kenya raises tantalizing questions about just how humans really are meant to move.
ozziegontang's insight:

Interesting study. Would have to see where they feet are when they touch the ground. Jan Hagelbrand of Sweden ran for U.S. international University in San Diego. I had a Sanyo cassette video recorder that could be played back in slow motion. I was used to video machinery and also surgeries. It looked like Jan was a heel striker. The difference was that when his foot touched the ground it was under his center of gravity and not in front of it. Would like to see the videos as the pictures shown, I can't really tell if the heel touches with the leg in front of them or with the heel under their center of gravity.

I started teaching ball/heel/ball running back in the late 70's after using one of the first slow motion video recorders made by Sanyo.  If you march in place you'll see that the ball then the heel touches. Didn't think that I'd see it accepted in my lifetime.  Thanks to Born to Run, Barefoot Bob Saxton, Chirunning, Pose Method, running mindfully or Mindful Running continues to grow in acceptance.  It isn't the stupid shoe as one of my early mentors shared with me.

Mindfulness Improves Reading Ability, Working Memory, and Task-Focus, say UC Santa Barbara Researchers
ozziegontang's insight:

Just a reminder that while all this amazing research is being done; the human part of the story is:  Mindfulness Is A Practice.

It is about quieting the chatter. It is realizing that multi-tasking is an abstraction and a distraction.

Sorkh Razil is a reminder of how easy it is to lose one's humanity to technology.  Lee Thayer put it: We create technology and then technology creates us.  I would add, we forget that our most advanced technological tool is our brain shared in this group of herd/back animals called humanity.

I cannot teach you anything.  I can share my perspective and interpretation.

As Siddhartha shared:  I can think. I can wait. I can fast.

Sitting quietly, I can observe my thoughts. I can wait as I go back to observing my breath.  It is interesting that we call it fasting whereas we are slowing by not being consumed by the comsuming we need for staying alive. In such a practice we get more deeply in touch with our being alive.

ozziegontang's curator insight, April 22, 2013 7:51 AM

We are herd/pack animals who call ourselves human beings or social animals.  The helpers are people who revert back to their instinct to help a fellow man.  Often at peril to their own lives. Often sacrificing their own life to save another.  When you look at the derivation of "sacrifice" it is made up of two Latin words "sacra" and "facio"  that is "to make holy."

Bombshel says it beautifully. This is how I shared the Power of One back in 2010 about a dear friend, Rauni Prittinen King who is the co-founder with Dr. Mimi Guarneri of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine.

The Power of One united is a force  that reunites body/mind/spirit back into the basics of being: human.

When running becomes part of one's practice.  Doing the same thing on a regular basis allows me to see how the one common thread throughout this practice is doing and being and experiencing. Me doing the practice being that thread. The path is the same. The environment changes daily or even hourly.

ozziegontang's insight:

When it comes to leadership, it is most important to first be able to lead myself. That begins with listening to what is going on within me.  I focus my attention being present and aware. I look at my feelings and thoughts.

ozziegontang's insight:

Like choosing the right mentor, one can observe someone that moves through life and space gracefully.  Imitation works well.  Practice doesn't make perfect. It makes permanent.  What is it that I want permanent in my practice.  So running, like life, like business is about being competent and challenging myself to be better than I was today.  It's not about striving, it about being the best me.  Buddha in the Kalama Sutra says it this way:

After thorough observation, investigation, analysis and reflection, when you find that anything agrees with reason and your experience, and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, and of the world at large; accept only that as true, and shape your life in accordance with it; and live up to it.

ozziegontang's insight:

Just came across this at Michael Sachs FB page.  In 1981, US International University start a Ph.D. program in Clinical Sport Psychology. One of the main faculty was Bruce Olgivy, sort of the grandfather of Sport Psychology. Great faculty that lasted only a year.  The adjunct faculty from other universities were told by their schools that what they were doing could jeopardize their tenure.

Looks like the Center is off and running.  It is all about being mindful to all vested interests.  Congratulations.  My daughters were raised on the statement: If you want to know the future; create it.  The Center is doing that for the coming generations.
