DUBAI: When Russian tanks trundled into Ukraine on Feb. 24, alarm bells started ringing in places even far away from the war zone. It transpired that many countries depended heavily on the two warring parties for their wheat supplies, with Arab states of the Middle East and North Africa region figuring prominently on the list. Which is partly why, for the governments of Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, and Sudan, as well as international aid agencies, the conflict has felt much closer to home than the geographical distance suggests.

Bakeries, brewers and milk producers are expecting the increase in the price of grains triggered by the Ukraine war to drive their costs higher with many saying they plan to absorb the blow for as long as financially feasible. On Tuesday, Times of Malta reported how Malta’s biggest importer of grains, Federated Mills, warned of the possibility that other countries will start to restrict exports of grains and called for a national strategy on the importation of wheat. While the problem is not imminent, it may affect the supply of products on the local market in the long run.

By UkrAgroConsult, 13/11/2018 Black Sea wheat traded using blockchain Monday in a pilot deal between Solaris and Transoil International via the Cerealia Platform, the platform's developer said. A Russian 25,000 mt parcel of 11.5% protein wheat on a FOB basis at Novorossiisk for December delivery traded for an undisclosed price. The platform developer said it was the first such Black Sea wheat deal. Blockchain is a mechanism that allows the chronological and public display of transactions that have taken place on the platform. The goal is to minimize risk and any conflict that may arise by storing all related data on blockchain to settle disputes smoothly, should they arise. "The next stage is to support emerging market traders in their local domestic currencies using fintech," Cerealia CEO and co-founder Andrei Grigorov said.

After Russia said on Monday it would end the Black Sea Grain Initiative – a deal to provide safe export routes for about 20 per cent of the world’s grain – governments have been trying to assess the impact on world hunger. Ukraine, sometimes called the breadbasket of Europe, is a major producer of sunflower oil, wheat and maize, but when Russia invaded in February 2022, turning much of the agriculturally rich east of the country into a warzone, wheat prices were hit hardest amid a general surge in global food prices.

by Abhishek Budholiya (The Tactical Business), 03/10/2018 The global market for grain and cereal crop market has been expanding at a robust rate because of several government initiatives to improve the quality of food products. Not only has the market for grain and cereal crops expanded in size but has also undergone key improvements in the quality of its products. The demand within the global grain and cereal crops has risen on account of the health benefits served by these crops to the masses. Furthermore, several packaged as well as non-packaged food products are now added with processed grains or cereals to enhance the nutritional value of the food. Owing to these reasons, it is safe to estimate that the demand within the global market for grain and cereal crops would increase by leaps and bounds.
