The Senate on Tuesday night approved a bipartisan bill meant to promote studies into the effects of marijuana. The move comes one week after the House passed separate cannabis research legislation.

The Cannabidiol and Marihuana Research Expansion Act, which was filed last year, advanced by unanimous consent after being slightly amended on the floor. Its main function would be to streamline the application process for researchers who want to study the plant and to encourage the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop cannabis-derived medicines.

Medical Marijuana, Marijuana and Your Job?

"How many people do you think tell their employer or fellow employees that they got a medical card? Despite the fact that clinical and social understanding of cannabis has improved over the past ten years, acceptance has been slow. Your job or your health? Choose one."

I certify patients for medical marijuana use and one of the key questions I ask is, “What kind of work do you do? Does your employer perform drug tests, and if so, is THE TESTING done pre-employment, random or only if there is an accident or injury?

On one occasion, my patient was a Train Engineer/Conductor.  Not the train at the zoo, but Amtrak.  He had real medical needs and was already using a heavy dose of prescription medications and   opiates. All were were properly prescribed and with side effects.  But, since marijuana is still not legal at the federal level and since his job was high risk for accidents and injuries, I had to say NO.  Quite the conflict for both of us. But I’m the one going to court on a death or serious injury case if he crashes the train, kills someone, and the drug test is positive for THC.  "Who recommended the card?  ME? Oh no."

We know that properly prescribed opiates are considered OK, although more dangerous and addictive, but marijuana is still not legal everywhere and especially at the FEDERAL LEVEL?

What should you do?

National Cancer Institute Quietly Confirms Cannabis Can Cure Cancer

"Their Report on Cannabis Antitumor Activity"

"Studies in mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells."

A pair of congressmen on Friday introduced bipartisan legislation to allow cannabidiol (CBD) and other hemp-derived compounds to be marketed and sold as dietary supplements—a change that could clear up legal confusion at retailers across the country.

The proposal, sponsored by Reps. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA), is part of an ongoing effort by the federal government to find a path forward on hemp and its derivatives after they were broadly legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill.

The new bill would make clear that Congress wants to see federally regulated CBD and other hemp products made available to American consumers.
