Curation Can Cure the Body and the Mind: Bibliotherapy and The Novel Cure

Curation Can Cure the Body and the Mind: Bibliotherapy and The Novel Cure | Health Care & Health Politics & Infographics | Scoop.it

shelbylaneMD's insight:

This is amazing, since I read all the time and I frequently prescribe a book and a joke.  Great works. Not easy to  get in America.

Robin Good's curator insight, September 15, 2013 12:44 PM

Though you may have not heard about "bibliotherapy" before,"lovers of literature have been using novels as salves – either consciously or subconsciously – for centuries."

Bibliotherapists, are expert book curators, who can, depending on your ailment or pain, suggest a specific set of books to read. And in 2008 an official Bibliotherapy Service was born.

"When the School of Life opened its doors in 2008, we began to see clients – in person, by skype, in London, in Bognor Regis, Barcelona, Bangkok – for individual 40-minute sessions, after which we sent them a tailor-made eight-book prescription.

We became so busy we took on a third bibliotherapist, ex bookshop-manager, Simona Lyons.

Five years on, having tried and tested our cures, we have written an alternative medical reference book, The Novel Cure: An A-Z of Literary Remedies*

Whether you are "...moving house, looking for Mr/Mrs Right, or having a midlife crisis...  ...losing a loved one or becoming a single parent... ...Whether you’ve got the hiccups or a hangover, a fear of commitment or a sense of humour failure..." in The Novel Cure there is a selected novel or book that can help you.

The Novel Cure is not a medical reference book but a curated selection of what to read to heal any pain: physical or psychological without ever suggesting any traditional remedy or medicine.

The suggested readings include anything from Apuleius to the contemporary Ali Smith embracing over two thousand years of world literature.

Thanks to Ella Berthoud and Susan Elderkin, for having shared their wonderful story and for providing such an inspiring and useful resource for many.

Quite an inspiring story. 8/10

Who would have thought it that reading could be curative ... but apparently it is!

Brilliant concept in a unique package. I'm better already just from reading the introduction.  And no nasty side effects.

 THE JACKHAMMER PARENT

shelbylaneMD's insight:

 THE JACKHAMMER PARENT

What's behind the JackHammer Parent Movement?

This week we published an article called “The Jackhammer Parents Are Here and They’re Destroying School.” What are jackhammer parents, you ask?

“Similar to the helicopter and lawnmower parents before them, jackhammer parents scrutinize both their children’s opportunities and challenges, intervening in schooling, grades, and friendships. But born during the added pressures of a pandemic and divisive political climate, jackhammer parents take their intensive parenting to new heights. Dialogue is fruitless. Compromise is a non-option. They’re not just interested in getting their way; they need anyone who gets in their way obliterated.”

Face Mask Protects Wearers and Others: Studies

"Of the two other studies, one, which included 16,397 health care workers and first responders, found that use of an N95 or surgical mask all of the time versus not all of the time was associated with a decreased risk for infection. The second study, which included 20,614 asymptomatic health care workers, found that the risk for infection was reduced with any mask use versus no mask use."

shelbylaneMD's insight:

"One important reason to wear masks is to prevent those who don't realize they are infected or have mild symptoms from infecting others," Dr. Chou said. "But this study wasn't designed to evaluate that."

Why the Second Wave of the 1918 Spanish Flu Was So Deadly.......
The first strain of the Spanish flu wasn’t particularly deadly. Then it came back in the fall with a vengeance.

"The horrific scale of the 1918 influenza pandemic—known as the "Spanish flu"—is hard to fathom. The virus infected 500 million people worldwide and killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million victims—that’s more than all of the soldiers and civilians killed during World War I combined. "

shelbylaneMD's insight:

May the life and accomplishments of Dr. Lorna Breen, be so remembered.

God Bless you, Lorna M. Breen, MD,

"It's Too Much"

Ebony Jade Hilton, MD, an intensive care unit anesthesiologist in Charlottesville, tweeted: "Behind the white coat & stethoscope we are just humans. I can't explain the emotional load that comes from being the final say on orders that determine life or death for another person. Top that with the threat of your own life & it's too much."

As an emergency physician, the mental health issues of being on the frontline are frequently hidden but take their toll, in unsuspecting ways. Ways that you may think are normal, or just anxiety and get dismissed as, "This too Shall Pass",  but sometimes it doesn't.   Especially,  after every person that you pronounce, dead.

God Bless Dr. Lorna Breen, her family, friends, and colleagues. Her Legacy.

How are Monoclonal Antibodies being used for COVID-19?

Should You Prescribe Monoclonal Antibodies for COVID Patients?  If so, when is this therapy useful and when is it too late?

"I think centralizing or finding somewhere where these infusions can be given — there has to be a little bit of proactivity. I know that's tough when people are tired, overwhelmed, and have so many other demands. That's really part of the problem. For the next several months as we continue to have high-risk people become infected, needing hospitalization, and having to go into the ICU, trying to treat them early and keep as many as possible off of that path would help us all."

shelbylaneMD's insight:

While vaccines roll-out slowly, other therapeutics should be considered to help reduce morbidity and mortality.  This is an excellent discussion for review with Drs. Whyte and  Woodcock.

Read in The Wall Street Journal: Covid-19 Vaccine’s Slow Rollout Could Portend More Problems

shelbylaneMD's insight:

Far fewer people are being protected against Covid-19 as the process moves slower than officials had projected and has been beset by confusion and disorganization in many states.

The problems are mounting.  Not enough Staff. Some sites require pre-covid tests. Social distancing issues.  And Pharmacists are giving out vaccines to the wrong people.  Batches are being destroyed.   Allergic reactions and consumer distrust.  Confusion on top of confusion.  It's not as easy as the flu shot.

Tracking the Coronavirus Vaccine

The biggest vaccination effort in history has begun. This week, the U.K. was first to clear the use of a new shot from Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE. The U.S. will likely do the same, and a separate vaccine from Moderna Inc. is close behind. By the end of 2020, tens of millions of people could be inoculated. Next year: billions more.

Bloomberg is tracking nine of the most promising vaccines around the globe, from national procurement deals to shots in patients’ arms. By our count, at least 7.85 billion doses have already been allotted.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Chadwick Boseman’s Importance to the Black Community

Chadwick Boseman was not Black Panther. He was not Thurgood Marshall. He was not Jackie Robinson. He was not James Brown. He was a highly skilled actor who was able to bring his unique blend of intensity, charm, and passion to these icons that made them memorable beyond the films themselves. It is Chadwick’s kind but determined face that we see in our minds when we think of black heroes, it is his compassionate but serrated voice we hear. He was one of those rare actors whose work embodied a gentle soulfulness that drew us to him. Jimmy Stewart had it. So did Sidney Poitier. We knew they cared. They made us care.
