The following videos were posted by Simon Gillis from Autodesk at the Sustainable Design Toolbox to describe in more detail the steps necessary to carry out the Rapid Energy Modeling (REM) of existing buildings. You can see how you can use 123D Catch and Project Vasari or Revit 2012 to create energy models of existing buildings to explore retrofit options.

A couple of weeks ago, Graphisoft, developer of ArchiCAD, released a new white paper called “Get There Faster with ArchiCAD,” which attempts to identify the most important criteria that architects should be looking at when selecting which BIM tools they should work with, as well as clarify the advantages of ArchiCAD over other BIM tools. While Revit is not specifically mentioned, it is obviously the main target of the white paper, being the leading BIM competitor to ArchiCAD. This AECbytes newsletter summarizes the content of the white paper, and analyzes it in the context of the current BIM adoption in the AEC industry.

PHPP—the energy modeling software for the Passive House energy-efficiency standard—requires users to input wall areas calculated to the exterior of the thermal boundary. By default Revit does not calculate wall areas this way. Gregory Duncan Architect created a workaround to create a wall schedule that can export meaningful information to PHPP.

The coordinate system or Revit has been rehashed many times on blogs and posts, but has been clear as mud for me, and I suspect a lot of other people. So I took the time to really figure out it, and here's a 30 minute explanation of how Revit's coordinate systems work, interrelate, how true north works, and how to put multiple copies of a building on a site."

When we ask users how they model and define their Revit assemblies (walls, floors, roofs) most will tell us that their libraries are made up of complete assemblies created from inside to outside. As we move away from traditional ‘model to get the drawings’ workflows and begin to create models that are shared and leveraged beyond our own needs as architects, we start to realize that our initial approaches might need to be re-examined.

An architect visits a job site and notices that a detail is incorrect. This must be quickly communicated to the team so a solution can be proposed. The design is updated in the cloud, and it can be viewed on a colleague’s mobile phone… Or by others working on desktops back at the office.

What is your role as an Architect? (How i spent my week in the CME) If youre on my Facebook page or Google+ or Twitter, youve seen these images already. However, this week and last i got to engage one of our Project Teams, and help them kick off their Revit Model. During that time, through Twitter and Social Media, i read two things, and reacted: 1. All architects should be Programmers. (Tweeted, and i disagreed when i read it) 2. Using Revit is frustrating every day. (Facebooked, and i got annoyed) Then, happenstance had it that i was asked to write a paragraph on how Emerging Technologies change our jobs... And i laughed. It isnt the most original comparison out there, but i liken us to the Record Industry: Are Architecture and Engineering Firms still making Casettes and wanting to sell them for 14 dollars? Certainly a CD or an online album is a better product, so... Isnt it a little justifiable that the road towards a better product is a harder road?
