Another simple, quick yet useful tip today! A while back we mentioned Sketchup in our Topo tip, today I’m going to show you how to assign a material to that topo (or any object really) that you bring in to Revit from Sketchup.

There have been many posts about how you can control Sketchup materials in Revit using Object Styles. However, this relies on the existence of different layers for each distinct material in the original file. If you have an SKP file and would like to create the layers you need (without using Sketchup itself), you can use this method:

Every time I talk to Mitchel Stangl, I learn something new. Mitchel’s a mechanical engineer who uses SketchUp Pro to build massively intricate models of processing and manufacturing facilities. On his last visit to SketchUp HQ, Mitchel helped me improve my workflow by telling me about the File > Save A Copy As… command (which we apparently added at his suggestion).

Mental Ray renders are great, but sometimes you want something softer, more impressionistic. There are many ways of achieving this, but ideally I want to stay as close to the Revit workflow as I can. So I aim to limit any image manipulation outside of Revit to what I can achieve in 10-15 minutes.

In this Viewpoint article, Ray Crotty, who is the founder of the UK-based C3 Systems and the author of the recent book “The Impact of Building Information Modelling,” contrasts drawings with models, asserting that with drawings, no matter how detailed you get, you can only say approximately what you mean or intend, whereas there is no such ambiguity in models. He also questions what would happen if the information used in the AEC industry were fully trustworthy – needing no checking – and were readily computable, as the BIM vision promises, and if the operation of the construction industry were based on the use of effectively perfect information.

Vectorworks user William Maple was asked to render views of The 1968 Exhibit so that various members of the team and donors could have a better sense of the overall project. “My task was to simplify the framework design of the exhibition (developed by John Low) and fabrication drawings so that they could be illustrated and walk-through animations could be produced,” explains Maple.

Despite the grand announcements, the CAD world evolves at a slow pace with few real advancements each year. This is why when I looked into MoI (Moment of Inspiration) the first time, I wasn't really expecting much. After a short while I noticed that the system created by Michael Gibson was not just another modeling system. With surprise I saw some new ideas and a strong effort to rethink the modeling problem with a fresh approach. In particular I appreciate a system that is easy to use and that manages to hide the complexity of the underlying mathematical model. I thought it would be interesting to get a first hand look into Michael's innovative ideas and vision. Here is the interview.

Oftentimes, you will want to flatten a DWG file before bringing it into Revit, so that Revit isn't confused by all the Z-values... you can use FLATSHOT or the DXB plotter methods, as described below:

The SketchUp Import plug-in adds two ways to get SKP files into your AutoCAD drawings. Use the IMPORTSKP command to convert a SketchUp file, stored in a local or shared folder, and insert the model into the current drawing. The GETMODEL command allows you to browse or search the Google 3D Warehouse and download SketchUp models directly into your drawing.
