Estamos en el proceso de instalación de la primera estación de contaminación lumínica a través de la cuenca hidrográfica del Canal de Panamá. Contamos con equipos astronómicos profesionales como cámaras QHY CCD, fotómetros TESS, TASS, cámaras DSLR Nikon5600a, espectrómetros ALPY 600 y otros instrumentos. Adicionalmente, buscamos cielos de referencias nocturnos para comparar con los cielos contaminados de la ciudad de Panamá. What does it feel like regarding light pollution at any given spot in the world?

This new map application allows an estimate experience on a virtual 360° sky dome, showing what light pollution levels are to be expected from which direction.

One can also compare sites, to find the best (and darkest) place to be for star gazing and astronomical observations, or to just enjoy the natural night.

Wrapping up official Dark Sky Week with something special: Nightness — an interactive geospatial visualization on how artificial light affects plant ecosystems. 🌱✨

Built on Google Earth Engine, Nightness uses multi-spectral satellite imagery to track the spread and intensity of nocturnal illumination — and its impact on vegetation patterns. This is achieved by combining multiple layers from both low light radiance (VIIRS) and infrared (NDVI) satellite sources into a single cartographic presentation.

My interest in remote sensing began during my architectural and urban design training, where I became fascinated by how we can observe and understand environments from a distance. Nightness grew out of that long-standing curiosity, now combined with a focus on ecological impact. It's open-access under a Creative Commons license: free to use, share, and build on.

Artificial light at night without professional lighting design disrupts natural cycles that plants and entire ecosystems have evolved with over millions of years. It alters flowering times, growth, and species interactions. As our cities grow brighter, thoughtful lighting design that balances human and ecological needs becomes ever more critical.

While Nightness is a personal citizen science project and not a professional research study, I hope it brings visibility to an issue that often goes unseen.

Cats are crepuscular, equipped with perfect sensors for low-light conditions - swiveling their ears 180° independently and hearing sounds up to 64kHz, they can easily pinpoint sounds in the dark. Having eyes with many more rod cells than we have and a wide pupil to let in extra light, and lastly a special layer called the tapetum lucidum that reflects light like a mirror, it's hard for prey to escape, not to mention the well developed sense of smell and the ability to perceive pheromones...

So how does aritificial light / light pollution affect this darkness expert? Their behavior, foraging, mating, breeding, etc.?
