Venues 'must be value for money'

The three biggest arts venues in Leicester have been asked to work together to make the most of the taxpayers' money they receive.

 

De Montfort Hall, Curve and Phoenix Square are jointly given £2.3 million a year by Leicester City Council.

 

Now, the authority has asked them to make the most of the cash by doing more joint marketing campaigns.

 

Assistant City Mayor Councillor Ted Cassidy said he wanted to see the money better spent.

Most meat eaters probably don’t want to think too deeply about the killing of the beast that lies upon their plate. The very word abattoir some find upsetting. But I think carnivores should probably welcome the opening of a Leicestershire Quality Meat, a £2 million abattoir in Six Hills, Leicestershire.

What I hadn’t realised was that she was preparing to launch herself on the Leicester public as our latest artisan breadmaking business. Leicester Born and Bread – do you see what she’s doing there?- is offering handmade, preservative-free loaves on a local basis. Heck if you live in the West End of Leicester she might even drop it round by bike.

Parking charges are set to more than double for many patients as managers at Leicester's hospitals try to balance their books.

Those parking for an hour will have to pay £2.30 instead of £1 and other increases include a rise from £2 to £4 for two to three hours parking.

Hospital bosses are looking for a private company to take on the task of sending out more than 700,000 letters to patients each year.

 

Union officials are worried it could lead to job losses, although managers at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust have given assurances this is not the case.

Peace campaigners held a five-minute silence to mark the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima in 1945.

Two dedicated dementia wards are to shut – angering fund-raisers who collected £160,000 for their creation.

 

The Forget-Me-Not appeal was launched last year to create a "centre of excellence" for dementia at Leicester General Hospital, with a dedicated ward, trained staff and a sensory garden to help the growing numbers of people with the condition.
