The Anti-Bedroom Tax Federation meeting in Braunstone on Tuesday night heard from:
- grandparents who care for their disabled granddaughter at weekends to give her family some respite - they will have to pay from their 'benefit' for the room they keep for her because she does not live with them;
- grandparents whose grandchildren live away from Leicester and come to stay sometimes in the spare room. They have to pay for the room they use, or move somewhere smaller and lose the opportunity to spend quality family time together;
- a family with a tiny room that is defined as a 'spare' bedroom;
- someone on dialysis who has really bad days when he needs someone to stay with him 24 hours a day;
- some people are panicking and some feel suicidal about how they will manage.
Also at the meeting were local people who, though not directly affected, were furious at just how "wrong" the bedrom tax is.
There are two new groups forming to fight this - Braunstone North and Braunstone South, and they will link with the Anti-Bedroom Tax Federation Leicestershire.
