The plans of Leicester's "City Mayor", Sir Peter Soulsby, to name a new square "Jubilee Square" took a knock at last night's meeting of the Council's Overview Select Committee.
Councillors heard from local campaigner Sally Skyrme who has collected over 1500 names on a petition calling for the new square, at the end of Leicester's High Street, to be named Peace Square.
Sally made a strong case but the City Mayor said that he had announced the name during the Queen's visit to the city and he would try to find an alternative space to be named Peace Square.
Several councillors said that they were unhappy with the process regarding the naming of the Square and Councillor Baljit Singh, along with several other councillors, suggested that the matter should be referred to the appropriate Scrutiny Commission.
Councillor Adam Clarke pointed out that there were other spaces in the city centre that could be named Peace Square.
In her reply to the discussion Sally agreed that there were other spaces in the city centre and suggested that one of these be named Jubilee Square. She urged councillors to show that they were listening to what people in the city wanted regarding the naming of the Square.
The Chair of the Committee, Councillor Mohammed Dawood, said that the issue would be referred to the appropriate Scrutiny Commission.
