Geography with Mrs Dunn's insight:

How do we teach to foster the 21st century learner?

As young people move from the structured learning environment of school into further study, employment and the big wide world, it is important that they are equipped with as many relevant skills as possible. This means the teacher's job is equally more important and difficult than perhaps it has ever been. The competitive nature of the world as it is at present, coupled with the importance of technological skills has led to a change in approaches to teaching. This means that we, as educators, need to implicitly teach more skills like higher order thinking and make our teaching more relevant to the real world.

At first, the attached mind-map just made me frightful. Teaching has evolved dramatically in the time I have been in the profession and sometimes I struggle to incorporate all the pedagogy to ensure students are adequately prepared for life in the 21st century. However, seeing this infographic makes it feel a little less daunting and somewhat excited thinking about which skills I can incorporate into my teaching, especially in the context of the new Geography curriculum.

What does innovation in pedagogy look like?
It is generally acknowledged that the quality of an educational system depends upon the quality of its teachers. In focusing on the importance of pedagogies it is possible to argue that to help students meet new educational challenges, teachers need to reflect upon and update their repertoire of practices. Preparing young people to meet new contemporary challenges means reviewing and updating the pedagogies teachers use. Innovation at the level of practice must be seen as a normal response to addressing the daily challenges of a constantly changing classroom.

Change is not an extra, but a pedagogical problem-solving process that builds on the creative, intuitive and personal capacities of teachers. The new OECD publication, Teachers as Designers of Learning Environments: The Importance of Innovative Pedagogies, aims to help teachers navigate the huge number of promising practices and new approaches within the innovation landscape. It builds on the analysis of six clusters of innovative pedagogies and the insights of networks of innovative schools to offer a baseline from which teachers can innovate themselves.

GeoGuessr is a geography game which takes you on a journey around the world and challenges your ability to recognize your surroundings.

Greatest Geography Games

Other than the obvious hit, Geoguessr, here are a few other favourites...

https://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm

Treat the world like one giant puzzle! Slot in all the countries to where they belong! Choose three different levels of difficulty. Great for a white board or as a race amongst class members.

http://gameon.world/

A competitive way to see who knows the most about where places are located around the world.

https://smartypins.withgoogle.com/

Smarty Pins presents players with a trivia question that they have to answer by placing a pin on a map. Players earn "miles" for correctly placing a pin on the map.

This is my most favourite game! - Mrs Dunn

Another find the location game - this one is a little different in that players are given the city name and then they must find their location on map. The closer you get, the more points awarded!

Using LEGO to Learn Geography

Using LEGO to Learn Geography | Just for teachers | Scoop.it
We are always searching for ways to make our weekly memory work more
engaging and fun.

One way to cement geography memory work (especially for those tactile
learners!) is using a bucket of LEGO bricks.

Building continents with LEGOS, and then adding features is such a simple
way to make geography FUN!

As a Classical Conversations Foundations student, my son is currently
memorizing the names and locations of African waters (Cycle 1, Week 16).

Each week we always trace the map and also practice finding the location on
our globe.

Geography memory work is also included each day during our morning time.

As my guy was deciding on a presentation topic for the week, the idea to
create Africa from LEGO bricks arose.  I love the creativity that can occur
within the confines of our memory work!

He simply grabbed his geography binder (I printed maps for each week of
memory work from CC connected.) and used this week's map as a guide while
he was building.  He included the Zaire River, Lake Victoria, Zambezi
River, and the Nile River.

Large LEGO base plates, and a basic set of LEGO bricks are two very good
investments for a LEGO lover.

*A note about maps -- find a source you like and stick with it.  Keeping
the maps consistent during our geography studies has been very helpful.  My
two favorite sources for maps are CC Connected (for Classical Conversations
members only) and Notebooking Pages.

The Notebooking Pages Geography set includes labeled and unlabeled maps for
each continent.  They are extremely well done!

This simple act of recreating a continent with LEGO bricks will prepare my
son for Challenge A, where he will need to learn to draw Africa from
memory!

As he is asked to recall African waters during memory work review he will
visualize what he built to help with recall.

That's it.

Simple. Easy. Effective.

Just the way I like things to be in our homeschool!

Do you use LEGOS to make learning fun?   What are some things that have
worked with your children?

Geography with Mrs Dunn's insight:

Use Lego in the classroom??? Yes please! I tend to use play dough to create shapes and visual representations of concepts, places and processes - for example; outlines of nations and landforms or processes such as weathering or erosion. But! I was excited to see that others have Lego to complete similar tasks.

The idea of completing country maps or even flags is a great idea and allows for students to create their own masterpiece that demonstrates the knowledge that they have gained. The hands-on nature of the task also promotes involvement in their own learning and is particularly good with visual learners.

How can PlaneFinder be relevant in Geography?

Great question; let me tell you....

Firstly, this HAS to be used in desktop version. You can pick any plane that is flying in real time (students think this is fascinating) and in the program there is a function that shows the route the plane is flying; allowing us to see the environmental features below. It is a lot of fun to compare the different landscapes, landforms and human features and guess what the world looks like below.
