Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning 2011 report released

Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning 2011 report released | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

From Education Week:

The eighth annual Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning, released today at the Virtual School Symposium in Indianapolis, finds that single-district online programs—many of which include blended learning—are the fastest-growing segment of online education this year. (Single-district online programs are created by a district for the students in that district only.)

Another area of growth is consortium programs, which usually involve several districts banding together to pool resources and share expertise. Part of the reason for this is the decrease in state funding available for state-level virtual education opportunities, the report says.

Reaffirming the Dream: The Case for Civic Investment

Reaffirming the Dream: The Case for Civic Investment | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

In an article in Voices of Urban Education, Linda Darling-Hammond and Richard Riley write that civic commitment to equal educational opportunity is in peril. Public education faces two significant challenges. The population of students that schools have traditionally underserved is growing rapidly at the same time there is greater pressure for improving outcomes for all students and for equipping them with the knowledge and skills for success in the 21st century.

21st Century Teaching and Learning: Dear College Students: Why Social Media Matters To You | Michelle Pacansky-Brock

21st Century Teaching and Learning: Dear College Students: Why Social Media Matters To You | Michelle Pacansky-Brock | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

A friend of mine recently graduated with his BS degree in Finance. He had a great lead on a job at a high tech company and things felt promising. But the feedback he received was, "Spend some time developing your social network profile and then our recruiters will consider you." That's not something he learned in college. But, arguably, it should have been.

Why? Because in a participatory culture, what others say about you is more important than what you say about yourself. Step up, folks. It's time to join in.

"For the first time in more than three centuries, Harvard and Yale will concurrently offer the same course — and its primary "text" won't be a book, but rather a video lecture series comprising the world's greatest thinkers and leading scholars."

"It's more important to learn how to ask the right questions than to find the right answers."

Hechinger Report | An interview with Henna Virkkunen, Finland’s Minister of Education | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

We teach all pupils in the same classrooms. We don’t have really good, top schools and very poor, bad schools. We are quite good at giving special support to students with learning difficulties. About 25 percent of our pupils receive some kind of special support, but in regular classrooms—often the teacher has an assistant in the classroom. We also think it is very important that there aren’t too many pupils per teacher. We don’t have legislation limiting class size, but the average class size for all grades is 21. In first- and second-grade, it’s 19.

Rosen calls it a tech break. But rather than taking a break from technology, you give yourself permission to embrace technology for a particular amount of time, be it one minute or 15. “It works amazingly,” he says.

MathBench

MathBench | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Welcome to the MathBench Biology Modules! These modules introduce students (and anyone else who's interested) to the mathematical underpinnings of what they learn in introductory biology courses.

But unlike a textbook, the modules are not full of equations and proofs. Instead, we try to bring math to life using intuitive approaches, everyday situations, and even humor.

The modules contain hundreds of interactive activities, games, and questions. They range from the relatively simple (what to do with division) to the relatively abstruse (discrete diffusion models).
