![]() Massive open online courses – MOOCs – offered by top universities have expanded worldwide over the last three years, gaining students globally for courses designed in the United States and elsewhere and disseminated globally on platforms like Coursera, edX and the British-based FutureLearn.
Alfredo Corell's insight:
Many conventional MOOCs are developed and designed for Western teaching and learning experiences, says Auh, the lead project designer for MOOC 2.0. “But the general consensus here [among those working on MOOC 2.0] is that MOOCs education must be a collective effort from all parts of the world.”

![]() There is a variety of opinions in the media these days regarding online learning. Depending on what you read, online education can appear to be either a cure-all or cancer.
Alfredo Corell's insight:
1) Online learning is here to stay. 2) There is no significant difference in learning outcomes. 3) Online learning is widespread. 4) There is no single form of online learning. 5) MOOCs are not an example of high-quality online learning. 6) Online learning is well-suited to adult learners, but not necessarily traditional-aged students. 7) “Institutional” cost savings from going online are less than is often acknowledged. 8) Online learning could soon become the norm for “post-traditional” and graduate students who cannot afford the opportunity cost of traditional programs.
![]() "I read recently that content curation is dead. I have a few different arguments against this concept, but for now, I’ll keep it short and sweet: Content curation is not dead, and while the debate over curating content online vs creating new content will rage on and on, curating content for other reasons is still going strong. That said, there are a lot of different ways to go about content curation, so we’ve test driven a few different tools so you can figure out which might work best for you whether you’re curating content for work projects, assigning it as a school project, for your own professional development, or personal interests." I'm rescooping this for three reasons. First, the term "curation" is fairly new to me and it is nice to see how different forms it can take. Secondly, I read so many blogposts entitled "10 tools for this" or "35 reasons for that". It is nice too see one of those where all of the 6 tools are actually great. Third, the fact that I actually have experience with three of the six tools makes me feel good. So enjoy :)
![]() There is a staggering amount of free video available online that makes great fodder for teaching students, particularly in flipped classroom settings.
Alfredo Corell's insight:
Dpuzzle is a very simple tool that walks teachers through the video lesson creation process, with only a few limitations. With this solution a teacher can make the most of the video assets he or she has access to, plus everything the Internet has to offer. It is also an easy enough experience that you can quickly create individualized video lessons for different students and their particular needs or areas of interest.

![]() MOOCs and online education are a technology with potentially revolutionary implications—but without a precise plan for realizing that potential.
Alfredo Corell's insight:
In 2012, Stanford president John Hennessy pronounced that the MOOC was going to be “transformative to education.” But, he added, “We don’t really understand how yet.” Two years later, the landscape remains much the same:MOOCs are a technology with potentially revolutionary implications for education, but without a precise plan for realizing that potential. One way of getting there could be for the leaders of the MOOC movement to look more closely at old methods, from when education was less massive, less open, and entirely offline.
