How To Make The Most Of The British Library | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The British Library is the national copyright library of the UK and the largest collection of books, periodicals, journals and sound recordings in the world.

It was established as part of the British Museum in 1753 and moved to its current home on Euston Road in 1997. The imposing brick building just beside St Pancras station houses 170m items and counting; as the library receives copies of all books, newspapers, magazines and manuscripts published in the UK the collection is expanding at a rate of around 3m items per year.

Of all of the aspects of the student experience currently under scrutiny, you’d maybe think that academic textbooks were uncontroversial and their efficacy clearly understood. You’d think that the academic benefits of textbooks would be incontestable, and that both students and staff were clear on how textbooks are used to support learning. You’d be wrong.

Despite the general rule for quiet demanded by libraries, they’ve been the subject of some fairly significant noise this week.

Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell, with eight former Children’s Laureates, have written an open letter to Justine Greening, the Secretary of State for Education, demanding an investigation into school library service closures.

A strategic approach to inclusive practice in higher education | Jisc | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There's a significant upward trend in the number of disabled students entering higher education (HE). From 2016, funding changes in England mean that non-medical support such as note-taking, alternative formats and study support has been reduced, placing greater responsibility on institutions. The most cost effective response is to improve procurement processes and ensure inclusive practice is embedded in teaching, learning and assessment.

Teens can't tell the difference between Google ads and search results

Teens can't tell the difference between Google ads and search results | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The familiar narrative of teens and technology is one of natural proficiency — that young people just get technology in a way that older generations don't. But research suggests that just because children feel at home using smartphones, it doesn't mean they're more aware of the nuances of how the web works. In a new report published by the UK's telecoms watchdog Ofcom, researchers found that only a third of young people aged 12 to 15 knew which search results on Google were adverts, while this figure was even lower — less than one in five — for children aged 8 to 11.

Value for money -the student perspective final report | Students' Union Research

Value for money -the student perspective final report | Students' Union Research  | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

One of the OfS’ core priorities will be to ensure that all students receive ‘value for money’ from their ‘higher education provider’. Value for money is enshrined in the regulatory framework for higher education that the Office for Students will operate. Value for money is also a key student concern. In a survey of Students’ Union election candidate manifesto pledges last year, ‘value for money’ was the second most mentioned issue.

Despite this, the definition of ‘value’ and ‘value for money’ in higher education is contested. Some believe that it is about the quality of the student experience itself, while others focus on outcomes like the ‘graduate premium’. While the focus tends to be on the home undergraduate fee, the OfS also has a responsibility to ensure value for money for postgraduates, for international students, and in relation to other fees and charges levied by a provider.

Strategic approaches to learning analytics in UK higher education - Jisc Repository

Strategic approaches to learning analytics in UK higher education - Jisc Repository | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Learning analytics cannot yet be considered a mature field in UK higher education. However, the use of data about learners and their learning to address areas such as attrition and curriculum enhancement is increasingly being investigated through projects at an institutional level. A recent survey by the UK Heads of eLearning Forum (HeLF), which elicited responses from 53 institutions, suggested that there had been rapid change in the adoption of learning analytics over the past two years. Those institution s “working towards implementation” had nearly doubled from 34% to 66%. Meanwhile, the proportion of respondents’ universities not implementing learning analytics at all had decreased from 47% to 13% (Newland & Trueman, 2017).

At its new Waterside Campus the University of Northampton is doing away with lecture theatres in favour of more flexible ‘teaching spaces’.

It’s the latest evidence of the university’s developing approach to using digital technology to enhance teaching and learning. Already, Northampton has redesigned two-thirds of its courses to support its ‘active blended learning’ approach and the new teaching spaces are part of a strategy to give students best value from face-to-face time with teachers.

The higher education green paper is a radical document, explicitly designed to change universities. But beyond the debates about metrics, funding structures and social mobility is a far more fundamental reframing – of the very concept of higher education.
