When EDUCAUSE members identified their top 10 priorities for 2017, it was clear that data analytics is expected to play a big role. Data-informed decision-making is No. 3 on the list, and data management and governance is No. 6. Other initiatives, such as student success and completion (No. 2) and strategic leadership (No. 4), also are leaning more heavily on data than ever before.

As college students click, swipe and tap through their daily lives—both in the classroom and outside of it—they’re creating a digital footprint of how they think, learn and behave that boggles the mind. “We’re standing under a waterfall, feasting on information that’s never existed before,” said Mitchell Stevens, a sociologist and associate professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE). “All of this data has the power to redefine higher education.”

Big data has arrived in education. Educational data science, learning analytics, computer adaptive testing, assessment analytics, educational data mining, adaptive learning platforms, new cognitive systems for learning and even educational applications based on artificial intelligence are fast inhabiting the educational landscape, in schools, colleges and universities, as well as in the networked spaces of online learning.

It ranges from suggesting what movie to watch on Netflix to predicating national tragedies. Whether you realize it or not, as consumers, Big Data surrounds us everywhere, ultimately influencing decisions that we make every day.

I’ve written in the past about understanding the Terms of sites you are asking students to use and been interviewed about the implications of social media in classes. This year, one of the things I want to focus on is bringing those two things together. It is important that we don’t just know the terms we are asking our students to work under when we enforce the use of social media or other proprietary digital platforms for course work, it is important we know the implications and the devastating effects these tools and platforms might have in the future for our students.
