Shan Carter on data storytelling

Shan Carter on data storytelling | information analyst | Scoop.it

Shan Carter, who makes interactive graphics for The New York Times, talks telling stories with data in his aptly named presentation, "How I tried for years to find the perfect form for interactive graphics, how I failed, and why, whether a perfect form exists or not, I've stopped my desperate pursuit."

He starts with finding a balance between statistical analysis and story, and then finishes with the kicker that visualization is a form of communication just like a movie or a book. And that carries with it its own implications.

Email and Web of Data: Private meets Public (and vice-versa) | Main / HomePage

Email and Web of Data: Private meets Public (and vice-versa) | Main / HomePage | information analyst | Scoop.it

Submission Deadline: February 5, 2012

The growing amount of available data on the WWW is a new opportunity to improve Messaging systems (i.e. EMail, Social Media, Instant Messaging) communications, processing and presentaion. This workshop is dedicated to explore how public web data, such as identities, agendas or various information published on the web can meet private Email data (semi-structured headers, information extracted from emails, footers such as signatures, etc.) to bring new insight for users, and prevent error or abuse. Reciprocally, private communications can become public (think about public email archives, leaked email datasets, etc.), but need to implement web standards to be efficiently distributed and linked. This private/public duality, applied to Email, is the basis of this workshop, which goes beyond technical aspects and aims at exploring impacts on users’ practices, interfaces and trust.

Your Next Step To Counter The Incoming Information Overload: Develop a Personal Information Diet

It is not a problem of information overload or bad filters. It's about time we learn how to build (maybe with the help our own "trusted curators" too) our own "information diet".

Find out more about it here: http://www.amazon.com/Information-Diet-Case-Conscious-Consumption/dp/1449304680

Hi Beth & Robin,
Beth, I'm going to read the piece on "information coping skills" immediately as well. Robin, I can't wait to see what you come up with, it sounds great, would love to hear more about this......
Beth Kanter's comment, January 24, 2012 1:06 AM
Hi Robin,

Closing the loop here. I purchased this book and finally read it the last week. It is excellent and brilliant. Here's my review: http://www.bethkanter.org/info-diet/ The framing is great. And, there is a chapter that talks about content curation, only he calls information literacy.
Robin Good's comment, January 24, 2012 3:02 AM
Thank you Beth, much appreciated feedback.
