Recent scholarship on new media literacy has continued to nuance its definitions for the practices of producing and understanding the texts of computer-mediated communication. Stuart Selber’s Multiliteracies for a Digial Age and Gregory Ulmer’s Internet Invention: From Literacy to Electracy each provided substantial discussion of what it means (and what it takes) for writers to be “new media literate.” While the two texts were wholly different in method and approach, each offered important and useful ways of thinking about the “literacy” part of network literacy. Each argued that we cannot underestimate the extent to which context and culture inform digital writing, and that digital writing environments and practices present us with a unique opportunity to examine the social and cultural materialities of writing.. There are plenty of companies out there watching every move a user makes, with an aim to sending their way ads they will click on. I selected this wonderful piece by Michael J. Fern.
In this article the author refers to who has built an enormous following on several social networks by curtaing and sharing the latest news about technology and startups.
He says, just like Scoble, startups should use curation to catapult their online presence and influence.
**Curation is a useful approach for all companies but especially for startups:
Here's what especially caught my attention:
**Thought Leadership If outsiders view your company as a key source of industry informataion, you will quickly build your brand recognition as well as develop trust and goodwill among customers.
**Hub of Information By being first to market as a content curator in your space, and by hosting curated content on your website, you can quickly rise as a primary destination site for those interested in your industry.
**Collections By creating a bundle of articles, images, videos, or websites that relatee to a specific them and keeping it updated, this “guide” can become an important resource for social media marketers.
**Content with Commentary Using 3rd party articles and adding your own point of view you can build a dedicated following. He refers to Daring Fireball who has built an impressive following of 30,000 loyal followers
Takeaways:
**Successful curators often employ several of these approaches in addition to producing their own original content
**Avoid two common pitfalls
1. Duplicate content explained in the article
2. Copyright violations - you should always give credit to the original source of the post.

From @zbutcher: This is an excellent summation of the Online Video Platform/Provider (OVP) landscape by Larry Kless of http://klessblog.blogspot.com Congrats on a really well researched and thorough post pal. I'm sure many will appreciate you taking the time to put this great overview together. Thanks for mentioning my lil' topic here on Scoopit and agree, "We'll see... if the (OVP) numbers play out." - Joe B.
Excerpt:
"The Online video platform (OVP) market has matured over the last few years distinguishing itself from the free solutions by providing value added features, functionality and control. OVPs have made it easier for customers to buy their hosted video solutions vs. building it themselves. This infographic by Devious Media made the rounds over a month ago, compares four of the top video management companies in the online video platform (OVP) category, Brightcove, Kaltura, Ooyala and Longtail Video. While this is a just small sampling of the market and only scratches the surface of each platform's capabilities, it's important to know what to look for when choosing an OVP and what's available from each platform."
