Course Description Students in this course include clinical fellows, trainees in the pharmaceutical industry and practicing academic physicians who wish to enhance their understanding of immunology. Invited speakers lecture on the major topics in cellular and molecular immunology, including innate immunity, B cells, T cells and cytokines. Special sessions cover new advances in interventional clinical immunology and the molecular and genetic basis of immune-mediated diseases. There is ample opportunity for students to interact with the faculty outside the lecture room. Students are provided a syllabus and access to online lecture materials.

More than half of organ transplant recipients go on to have skin cancer, according to Euvrard and colleagues in the April 24, 2003, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In the June 27, 2004, issue of Transplantation, Guba and colleagues reported that calcineurin inhibitors might enhance the development of tumors through mechanisms unrelated to host immunity. However, sirolimus, an immunosuppressant that inhibits the mammalian target of rapamycin, has antineoplastic properties, according to Geissler and colleagues in the November 2008 issue of the American Journal of Transplantation.
This phase 3, multicenter, randomized, open-label trial by Euvrard and colleagues assesses whether sirolimus vs calcineurin inhibitor treatment is effective in preventing secondary skin cancer in kidney transplant recipients who have had at least 1 cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
The tumour microenvironment is an important aspect of cancer biology that contributes to tumour initiation, tumour progression and responses to therapy. Cells and molecules of the immune system are a fundamental component of the tumour microenvironment.
Erythema multiforme (EM) is an uncommon, immune-mediated disorder that presents with cutaneous or mucosal lesions or both. In herpes simplex virus (HSV)–associated EM, the findings are thought to result from cell-mediated immune reaction against viral antigen-positive cells that contain the HSV DNA polymerase gene (pol ).
Developed by a multidisciplinary group of national and international experts. Discusses full range of allergic/immunologic disorders. Case-based and thought provokingIncludes review questions and answers, providing a more comprehensive medium of education
Current approaches for the treatment of obesity, including diet and lifestyle changes, have not been successful in curtailing the obesity epidemic. The higher incidence of inflammation-associated chronic disease and greater susceptibility to infection in obese people represents a growing health threat. Improved understanding of the immunological processes that regulate obesity may yield new treatments for obesity-associated disorders.
We conclude that BCG treatment or EBV infection transiently modified the autoimmunity that underlies type 1 diabetes by stimulating the host innate immune response. This suggests that BCG or other stimulators of host innate immunity may have value in the treatment of long-term diabetes.

Mepolizumab for severe eosinophilic asthma (DREAM): a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. By - Prof Ian D Pavord DM, Stephanie Korn MD, Peter Howarth DM, Prof Eugene R Bleecker MD,...
Interpretation
Mepolizumab is an effective and well tolerated treatment that reduces the risk of asthma exacerbations in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma.
Researchers have determined that patients who received sipuleucel-T (Provenge, Dendreon) developed immune parameters that correlate to improved overall survival, giving researchers a better understanding of how the immunotherapy works at a cellular level to improve survival and suggesting that these parameters should be the focus of further studies on the treatment.

Subcutaneous trastuzumab, administered over about 5 min, has a pharmacokinetic profile and efficacy non-inferior to standard intravenous administration, with a similar safety profile to intravenous trastuzumab, and therefore offers a valid treatment alternative.

In 2011, we published our preliminary experience in the New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine. These publications describe the outcomes of the first 3 patients treated on a clinical trial using autologous T cells genetically modified with a chimeric antigen receptor (or CAR) targeting a CD19 molecule on CLL cells.
