Immunosuppressant Decreases Skin Cancer Risk in Kidney Transplant Recipients

More than half of organ transplant recipients go on to have skin cancer, according to Euvrard and colleagues in the April 24, 2003, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In the June 27, 2004, issue of Transplantation, Guba and colleagues reported that calcineurin inhibitors might enhance the development of tumors through mechanisms unrelated to host immunity. However, sirolimus, an immunosuppressant that inhibits the mammalian target of rapamycin, has antineoplastic properties, according to Geissler and colleagues in the November 2008 issue of the American Journal of Transplantation.

This phase 3, multicenter, randomized, open-label trial by Euvrard and colleagues assesses whether sirolimus vs calcineurin inhibitor treatment is effective in preventing secondary skin cancer in kidney transplant recipients who have had at least 1 cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

Immunological complications of obesity. [Nat Immunol. 2012] - PubMed - NCBI

Current approaches for the treatment of obesity, including diet and lifestyle changes, have not been successful in curtailing the obesity epidemic. The higher incidence of inflammation-associated chronic disease and greater susceptibility to infection in obese people represents a growing health threat. Improved understanding of the immunological processes that regulate obesity may yield new treatments for obesity-associated disorders.

PLoS ONE: Proof-of-Concept Promissing Treatment of Long-Term Type 1 Diabetes | Immunopathology & Immunotherapy | Scoop.it
We conclude that BCG treatment or EBV infection transiently modified the autoimmunity that underlies type 1 diabetes by stimulating the host innate immune response. This suggests that BCG or other stimulators of host innate immunity may have value in the treatment of long-term diabetes.

Médicos que prescriben aplicaciones via @edams

Médicos que prescriben aplicaciones via @edams | Immunopathology & Immunotherapy | Scoop.it

El New York Times dedica uno de sus artículos de tendencias a un fenómeno que me parece interesante: el uso médico de aplicaciones para el teléfono móvil.

Ver artículo original en New York Times:

La APP para IOS "RAcalculator" ha desaparecido de la iTunes Store española (se puede encontrar en la mexicana), y el video YouTube donde explicaba su funcionamiento ha sido borrado. Sólo se puede leer una pequeña nota de prensa:

¿Significa todo esto que entraña cierto peligro el uso directo por los pacientes?
