Alright, let’s dive deep into the fascinating case of the Kawasaki Corleo, a hydrogen-powered four-legged robot, and dissect it through the lens of human-centered change and innovation. As our founder Braden Kelley would tell you, it’s not simply a matter of “yes” or “no.” Innovation is a complex beast, and we must approach it with nuance.

Innovation isn’t always about starting from scratch. Sometimes, the smartest solutions come from taking what already works and applying it in new ways. That’s the essence of technology transfer—adapting innovations from one field to solve challenges in another. This approach helps businesses move forward faster, with less risk and opens the door to new opportunities.

In 2023, we began experimenting with over 40 AI tools. Initially, we used AI to simulate some innovation workshops we had previously conducted with clients to compare the results. Since then, we’ve applied AI in a variety of contexts: working on all kind of challenges (de processes, HR. communication, product and service development…) in very different sectors (pharmaceutical, food, bank, cosmetics…). Through these experiences, we’ve drawn some very clear conclusions.

Dig into human psychology to help people take risks and make innovation the norm within your organization. Imagine this: you’re on a game show standing in front of three doors. Behind one of the doors is a prize, behind the other two, goats. You select a door. The host then opens one of the remaining doors to reveal a goat, and offers you a choice. Do you want to stick with your original choice, or switch doors? Which option gives you a greater advantage of winning?

There is an 80 percent chance that growth “outside the box” is a top-5 priority in your company. The “box” refers to your company’s current business model, operating model, and mental model. But chances are, your company is not delivering that growth. Only 1 in 30 company startups build a new $50 million business, 29 out of 30 attempts fail. Even in good times, out-of-the-box innovation is a tough game. No one is really happy.

Measuring less than 5 mm in size, microplastics are formed over time as plastic materials break down but don’t biodegrade. Exposure to these substances can come through food, air, and skin absorption. While scientists are learning more about how these substances are absorbed by the body, questions remain about how much exposure is safe, what effect — if any — microplastics could have on brain function, and what clinicians should tell their patients.

One of the most annoying things I hear from leaders is that “we had a great strategy, but just couldn’t execute it.” That’s simply not possible. If you can’t execute it, it’s not a great strategy. Most likely, it was a fantasy cooked up by some combination of consultants and investment bankers which was enshrined in PowerPoint.

A great product alone isn’t enough to stay ahead in today’s market. Businesses need to find new ways to generate revenue and build stronger customer relationships. One of the best ways to do this is by offering services—either alongside or instead of physical products. Done right, service monetization creates steady income, enhances customer loyalty, and opens new growth opportunities. Yet, many companies struggle to make it work. So why are services such a valuable revenue stream? And what are the common mistakes businesses make?

Innovation in government often feels like a rare, big breakthrough that changes everything. But in reality, innovation is driven by curiosity—by asking the right questions and exploring new possibilities. In the public sector, where challenges are constantly evolving, fostering a culture of curiosity can lead to breakthroughs that drive progress and solve problems in unexpected ways.

You were born creative. As an infant, you had to figure many things out—how to get fed or changed, get help or attention, and make a onesie covered in spit-up still look adorable. As you grew older, your creativity grew, too. You drew pictures, wrote stories, played dress-up, and acted out imaginary stories. Then you went to school, and it was time to be serious. Suddenly, creativity had a time and place. It became an elective or a hobby. Something you did just enough of to be “well-rounded” but not so much that you would be judged irresponsible or impractical. When you entered the “real world,” your job determined whether you were creative. Advertising, design, marketing, innovation? Creative. Business, medicine, law, engineering? Not creative.

If you’ve been around the innovation world for a while you probably came across the 70-20-10 ‘golden rule’ for portfolio management. This ‘rule’ suggests that 70% of a company’s resources need to go toward core-business innovation, 20% towards adjacent innovation and 10% towards disruptive or radical innovation.
