Hospitals and Healthcare
There are many challenges facing hospitals and healthcare in the modern world we are living in. I've created this curation collection to save articles that help me understand what modern health in society is.  The articles here are general in nature and placed here to promote discussion. We advise that you talk with your health professional before changing any of your medication or treatment options.  Any of the online courses listed here may (or may not) be open for access or enrolment. Most are free to browse, some may charge a small fee if you wish to receive a certificate or record of learning.   Every effort is made to ensure that these links are up to date and be aware that some of these articles may be behind a 'paywall'. If you can’t get into an article, email me and I may be able to assist.  Views are my own.

Doctors Must Learn to Tolerate Uncertainty

Doctors Must Learn to Tolerate Uncertainty | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it
A generation ago, doctors didn’t tell patients they were dying. Patients ended up on ventilators they would have opted against. The architecture of modern palliative care was built to fix that and to teach doctors to have the tough conversations they’d once avoided. The fix worked. But this correction comes with its own potential for harm. Doctors today are so afraid of protracting unnecessary suffering that we run the risk of being too certain, too soon.

In the intensive care unit, our most important procedures are conversations — the family meetings in which doctors discuss a patient’s prognosis. There is a rhythm to these meetings. Early on, we describe a range of possible outcomes, often offering best- and worst-case scenarios. Later, we return with what we believe is a clearer sense of what is to come.
