The share of PhD students who publish during their studies rose by 70 per cent between 2000 and 2020, according to a new report on UK doctoral graduates’ contribution to innovation published by the Innovation and Research Caucus. The report draws on a dataset of almost 350,000 doctoral graduates, examining their outputs in terms of research publications and patenting, and examining regional and gender differences.

Some 94 per cent of students say they use generative AI to help with assessed work, according to this year’s HEPI/Kortext student generative AI survey. The findings, based on a Savanta survey of just over 1,000 full-time undergraduates, are said to show a “somewhat polarised AI landscape,” with a roughly even split between students who say AI makes them feel more or less lonely, between those students who felt their institution encourages AI use and those who did not, and between those students who preferred using AI and those who favoured traditional research sources.

A TASO-led study on the use of learner analytics to identify students with poor wellbeing has found no measurable causal link between the use of “nudges” to signpost wellbeing support and the subsequent uptake of such services, nor any link to re-engagement with studies. The report does note that there is “widespread literature” on the power of nudges to improve outcomes, and so their use should not be dismissed despite the findings of this study. But TASO also cautions that it is “not clear” that analytics data can effectively target students who are at risk of poor wellbeing.

Higher education students are increasingly using generative AI in their academic work. However, existing institutional practices have not yet adapted to this shift. Through semi-structured interviews with 23 college students, our study examines the environmental and social factors that influence students' use of AI. Findings show that institutional pressure factors like deadlines, exam cycles, and grading lead students to engage with AI even when they think it undermines their learning. Social influences, particularly peer micro-communities, establish de-facto AI norms regardless of official AI policies. Campus-wide ``AI shame'' is prevalent, often pushing AI use underground. Current institutional AI policies are perceived as generic, inconsistent, and confusing, resulting in routine noncompliance. Additionally, students develop value-based self-regulation strategies, but environmental pressures create a gap between students' intentions and their behaviors. Our findings show student AI use to be a situated practice, and we discuss implications for institutions, instructors, and system tool designers to effectively support student learning with AI.

The present comparative study examines the three main multidisciplinary bibliographic databases, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and OpenAlex, with the aim of providing up-to-date evidence on coverage, metadata quality, and functional features to help inform strategic decisions in research assessment. The report is structured into two complementary methodological sections. First, it presents a systematic review of recent scholarly literature that investigates record volume, open-access coverage, linguistic diversity, reference coverage, and metadata quality; this is followed by an original bibliometric analysis of the 2015-2024 period that explores longitudinal distribution, document types, thematic profiles, linguistic differences, and overlap between databases. The text concludes with a ten-point executive summary and five recommendations.
